Message 801229 - Posted: 23 Aug 2008, 10:27:07 UTC

Hello,

I'm running bonic (5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu) on few linux machines. It's like that for last 8 weeks (no problems, download, work, upload) Everything was fine till yesterday. I've started getting errors:

23-Aug-2008 08:59:24 [SETI@home] Starting 07jl08ae.27674.477.8.8.6_0
23-Aug-2008 08:59:24 [SETI@home] Starting task 07jl08ae.27674.477.8.8.6_0 using setiathome_enhanced version 603
FATAL: kernel too old

I wasn't changing anything - just noticed it stopped working. Do you know about any changes? What happened?

Thank you very much,

Regards,
-Artur.

You can use older versions by adjusting a app_info.xml in the SETI projects directory ($BOINC_DIRECTORY/project/setiathome.berkeley.edu/) and manualy place the 5.27 binary there. The 5.27 binary is available at : http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout/setiathome-5.27.i686-pc-linux-gnu

A sample app_info.xml for astropulse and SETI look like this - If you want to crunch SETI only, remove the Astropulse stuff in the app_info.xml :
<app_info>
	<app>
		<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
    	</app>
     	<file_info>
	       	<name>setiathome-5.27.i686-pc-linux-gnu</name>
	  	<executable/>
	</file_info>
	<app_version>
	      	<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
	     	<version_num>528</version_num>
	     <file_ref>
		  <file_name>setiathome-5.27.i686-pc-linux-gnu</file_name>
	    	  <main_program/>
	    </file_ref>
	</app_version>

     	<app>
       	  	<name>astropulse</name>
     	</app>
     	<file_info>
       	  	<name>astropulse_4.35_i686-pc-linux-gnu</name>
	 	<executable/>
     	</file_info>
     <app_version>
         <app_name>astropulse</app_name>
         <version_num>435</version_num>
         <file_ref>
             	<file_name>astropulse_4.35_i686-pc-linux-gnu</file_name>
             	<main_program/>
         </file_ref>
     </app_version>
 </app_info>

For the installation, stop the BOINC client and copy the files app_info.xml and setiathome-5.27.. to the projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/ directory. No start the BOICN client again with "./boinc_client -update_prefs http://setiathome.berekely.edu"

Message 801314 - Posted: 23 Aug 2008, 17:03:37 UTC - in response to Message 801247.

Hello,
similar problem, but no solution :-(
Running boinc for a long time using version 5.2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu with no problems on an elderly SuSE 8.2-system (but why update - I'm fully satisfied with it). Yesterday boinc-manager started updating to version 6.03 - and nothing works: Seti exits with an "Unrecoverable error". Looking closer on this problem shows that the lib "libXcomposite.so.1" is missing on my system. It's part of the X11-System. But I don't want to update my system only to run BOINC.
I try to fix the problem the way Dotsch suggest, but the oldest binary I found at "http://boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/download_fanout" was "5.12.i686-pc-linux-gnu" and it don't work.
So I finish my participation on Seti, bye bye ;-(
May be on day I will return...

KDL

If you enter the full URL as I have written, you will get the SETI 5.27 binary. - The old binary is still available.

Btw. on the most Linuxes it is posible to install the X11 libs as seperate packages.

I am running Slackware 10.2 and am also now getting the "Kernel too Old" error. I deleted my old installation and installed

boinc_compat_6.2.15_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

and

boinc_5.10.45_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh

and I get the same error..

Any suggestions beyond those already given as none of those seem to work.

Thanks

Could you please make a reset project. After the reset was successfull, stop the BOINC client and then look into the projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/ directory, if there are any WUs left. If there are any WUs and the SETI 6.0x binary, you can delete em.
Now install the binary and the app info again. Could you please verify if the BOINC client prints out a message "app_info.xml found - using anoynmous platform mechanism" happens. If not there must be a problem in the installation.

Dotsh, Thanks a million!! I followed your steps and we are back in action. The question I have is... What did I do? Does this mean that every time I want to upgrade the version of BOINC I need to go through these steps unless I upgrade my OS kernel?

Thanks again!!

You must differ between the BOINC client and the SETI application.
The SETI application version 6.x did not work correctly with the old kernels. With the file app_info.xml you would not get any applications updates by the SETI project. If you would use the actual versions, you need to install a newer kernel.
But the mayor change between the SETI 6.03 and 5.27 application are the seperated graphics and science part. The science part is the same in SETI 5.27. So in the end it did not harm if you use 5.27 or 6.03 from the science aspekt.
There are some new features based on the new graphics handling, for example a screensaver for Linux planed. So this would some features which would not be usable with the old kernels.

Btw. which BOINC client version do you use ? - Do you have also some problems with BOINC 6.x ? - If yes, you can still use 5.x. Same here, you would not get the new features which comes with the BOINC 6, until you upgrade the kernel.

But, I think that there is no need for a hurry for a kernel upgrade. Because everything works not as it should...

Thanks again!!

You're welcome !

I also had issues running Boinc 5.10.45 with the setiathome_enhanced ver 603 application.

My Kernel version is 2.4.36.

After finding this thread and carrying out the instructions by Dotsch about creating an app_info.xml file and downloading the 5.27 setiathome application I can now say that this box appears to be now crunching for Seti@Home again.

As an aside is anyone in the development team looking at this issue?

Simon

I think they consider it a feature, not a bug. See this windows thread (obviously w95 and nt4 are also supposed "kernels too old" :-)
