So I wonder why we put up with the federal reserve if they have done nothing but cause us harm?

They do not do any basic research, only applied research. They did not discover nuclear fission, they did not assemble the first airplane, nor the first transistor nor the first microprocessor. Civilian research did all this, the military only made use of these discoveries.

'til the military infiltrated the civilian sector... those darned 'terrorists'... ;)

(BTW - If military life is so great, why are you in the civilian sector punishing those who think otherwise.)

The Government Labs do undertake both basic and applied research. They do a lot themselves and they also fund a lot of basic research at universities and other labs around the country. I had an Army contract for my master's thesis--funded by the US Army Research Office --Durham (AROD). When I was in the Army I did Basic research on Neural modeling and threshold logic as well as microwave data processing. We also let a contract for computer simulation of neural processing to Syracuse University Research Center. The projects had different identifying number sequences for basic vs applied research.

Some scientists refused to do any further research when they discovered it was being used by the military, e.g. prof.Franco Rasetti of the Fermi group "I ragazzi di via Panisperna". Also the mysterious disappearance of Ettore Majorana between Naples and Palermo in 1938 was linked by writer Leonardo Sciascia to his unwillingness to let nuclear physics being used for bomb building, although I believe his probable suicide was motivated by personal reasons. I have spoken of this with prof.Emilio Segre', another of the Fermi group and a Nobel prize winner.Majorana is cited in the book by Roger Penrose "Shadows of the mind" as a great theoretical physicist. Fermi held him in high esteem and wrote a letter to Mussolini asking for a research on his disappearance. Majorana's body was never found.
