There is now a LinkedIn BOINC Group. You can join it by going to http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=678497. Non LinkedIn members will first be asked to join LinkedIn, a network of 25 million professionals.

LinkedIn is used by professionals to find resources, make sales and find jobs - and make contact with old friends and others with common interests. There are many "groups" that can be joined, and where members can contact other members. Some are work, profession or geography related, others are by interests. This linking proves useful in many ways - by finding, contacting and connecting with a person with specific skills by having something in common with them.

The BOINC group was created to gave a place to identify with BOINC in the LinkedIn environment; permit interested individuals to connect with each other; and to promote BOINC.

I'm afraid their account creation and login software seems totally dysfunctional. Using the copied password I defined when setting up the account, I get:
Confirm Your Email Address: In order to join this group you must have at least one confirmed email address.

and when I open the confirmation link and give the saved password I get:

Welcome, Michael Roberts.

The email address or password you provided does not match our records.

Obviously the email is correct since they know my name and sent me the confirmation request. The browser autocompletion entries also do not work. I can change my password. When I log out there is an option to make the browser totally forget account name and password. This does not work as Firefox 3 autocompletes next time I try to log in. I put in the correct new password and cannot log in.

Sorry - I am aware that there has been recent software changes at LinkedIn vis a vis the Groups and you seem to have fallen into one.

Try this - Logon to LinkedIn. Go to Groups and search for BOINC - click on it to register. Send the Group Manager (ie me) a message, and I'll watch over your registration. There were some problems yesterday causing a delay in registration so have some patience - I have found out that 3 to 4 days wait for a group registration - even from the bigger ones like DallasBlue - is normal.

I am not a LinkedIn employee or guru - just a normal user who found that there was no BOINC group and decided to voluntarily create one. Sorry I can't help you with a LinkedIn problem, but will try my best.

Unfortunately that is what I cannot do! I have sent an enquiry to their customer service.

That is a very good idea and I hope it is successful.

Whoops - sorry for the repeat message.

Just an idea about connecting with LinkedIn, especially in your case where it nonetheless recognizes you and sends you an e-mail.

LinkedIn permits multiple e-mails to be registered and used to logon, with one primary for messages. Since you imply it has been awhile since you used LinkedIn, is it possible that in the interim you have changed e-mail addresses, and that the e-mail you did receive from them is actually being forwarded from a previous e-mail of yours? You may wish to try logging on using an old e-mail address.

And - considering what I have now learnt about software problems at LinkedIn and their lack of responsiveness, I would have waited until after Labour Day when the group software and database upgrades are supposed to be complete, before creating and publicizing this group. Oh well . . .

Nonetheless, new members are coming in at a slow but accelerating pace - my hope is to eventually hit 1000. I expect that an initial 200 will join after seeing the announcements I put in Forums and BOINC put as News on their site. The membership will then blossom out through networking. So far there are 38 members.
