My wife and I are building our first from the ground up computer, a quad 6600 SETI/Rosetta cruncher. On the cheap... Linux ubuntu 8.04 has a better price :-) than OEM Windows XP or Vista, but does anyone know which one will run the optimized SETI app faster. If the differences are really minor, we'll just use Linux, at least for now.

So, anyone have any info?

Check the Top Hosts... go ahead and start with Ubuntu...(it's free)... Optimized Linux SETI is about the same speed as on Windows... Just make sure that it's "AK V8" for best results... ;-)

If this is purely a crunching box, you save yourself some more $$$ by using on-board video or a low-end video card. No sense spending good money on a gaming video card if you're just going to be crunching.

The motherboard I ordered didn't have on-board video, but I only got a $50 video card. It will work fine for everything except the latest generation of shooters.

I was also able to recycle an old copy of windows xp from a 6 yr old Pentium 4 space heater that is going to charity. So it is now a dual boot linux/xp box, just finished it today. Everything worked right off that bat, holding my breath for stability. First time ever building from the ground up. WHEEEEEEEE...

That was fun.
