Hi Mac I've just built this one, Q6600 CPU A$230, Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L MoBo A$79, 2GB Kingston KHX85002K2/2G RAM A$89, upgraded CPU cooler A$45, Mandriva Linux O/S A$0. I put together in a recycled case using an old 20GB HDD I had lying around. Say A$450, (roughly about 230 UK pounds) by the time you count a few cable ties etc. Had it up and running in about an hour, The CPU is O/C'ed to 3GHZ. Going on experience, this setup will chew a 55 credit unit in around an hour and should pull an RAC of around 5.5k - 6k (when the project servers get their act back together). Regards Brodo |

In the US, you are pretty much in a build your own mode. As to the lowest cost quad set up -- likely to be based on an AMD Phenom -- Motherboard, CPU, heat sink and fan combination might be as little as around $200 or so. 2G RAM -- $50 or less, then figure $60 for a decent sized SATA drive and $30 for a DVD recorder. Add about $35 for a low cost case (or $50+ for a better case) and $45 for good power supply. The rest would be keyboard, mouse, monitor. The motherboards would be Micro-ATX type boards -- integrated video and NIC. Not sure what the options would run in the UK -- in the US I typically use NewEgg for the components, though sometimes the local Fry's (it is dangerous that they local for me) have some very seductive motherboard/CPU combinations (as well as hard drive pricing). Does anyone know where I can get a cheap quad machine or do I have to build one myself. If I have to build one where and what pieces do I need so that it is cheap? Or shall I wait until the eight cpu is out? I am a novice at building these things or anything that goes inside them. |

Hi Mac Q6600 Base units available from Your local pcw (Liecester,Derby or Nottingham) for £399 £429. There is also a company in Bristol Portishead NovaT?. If you are into building also do kits from £300. Both do a 24 hour service if required. Michael. |

There is also a company in Bristol Portishead NovaT?. Would that be Novatech? Not terribly well known, but they're a stayer - I was buying from them ten years ago. For a first-time builder, it can be a good idea to go for a motherboard/CPU/RAM bundle, pre-assembled, tested and guaranteed. That's the expensive mistakes taken care of! The rest is much safer by comparison, and gives you a feel for what is involved. |

Got mine from Mesh. Pick a system and customise it to your needs/spec/price. |

I always build my own and use Scan or Dabs or occasionally MicroDirect All have special offers that are sometimes very good. Scan and Dabs are only about a mile apart near JJB sports Stadium Bolton, and I used to drive past them going to and from work, but Dabs no longer has pick-up point. MicroDirect are almost located within Manchester Uni campus. |

Speaking as a British ex-pat, I don't envy your task of putting together a great system in the UK. The prices there for computer components are shocking. Especially GPU's. Why is that? Just rip-off Britain? |

Just rip-off Britain? Rip-off Europe plus rip-off Britain. If you listen and /or read about it from political economists etc the reason is reportedly high business taxes at EU, State and local level. |

Just rip-off Britain? The UK has always been dear even when we joined the Common Market, you could get cars cheaper in France than the UK. It is still this way that is why all the big companies like to sell in the UK. At this moment our utility companies are subsideising France with their cheap electricity the UK government do matter which side wins will do nothing about it. |

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap quad machine or do I have to build one myself. Best to build. That way you get exactly what you want and no unnecessary extras. I buy mostly from Overclockers UK. They do an overclocked Q6600 bundle (motherboard, CPU, RAM, instructions) for £245.94 + VAT which is pretty good. Be lucky Neil |
