Well I know this thread is for ghost AP units, but I hope my query regarding MB work units will not be ignored. Was downloading a big bunch of tasks for one of my systems and I noticed that some of them were zero bytes in size. Screen cap can be seen here. Are these ghost units or something else. How would these be processed? |

Nothing to worry about, once they start they should finish immediately so no work wasted on them. -Dave |

Looks like those are part of the bad bunch identified earlier when the splitter was having issues generating work. Wendy Click Here for BOINC FAQ Service |

... Sees Candies makes the Best Chocolate to Me. In any case until an Optimized AP app is able to be made, I'll use the stock AP app, As 10-11 hours sounds a lot better than about 32-40 hours per WU. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

AP-WUs have a size of 8 MB ?? The way the estimates are set now, an AP WU is expected to take the same time as 42.5 Very High Angle Range MB WUs (which would take about 16 MB of disk space). If you have enough disk space to handle a VHAR shorty storm, AP work shouldn't cause any problem. OTOH, a shorty storm tends to overload the servers so you may never get a full set of those. Joe |

Anybody know yet if the new preference setting in 'resource share and graphics' to select AP, Enhanced, or both is working to suppress the ghost AP WUs if set to Enhanced only? "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Anybody know yet if the new preference setting in 'resource share and graphics' to select AP, Enhanced, or both is working to suppress the ghost AP WUs if set to Enhanced only? No. I think you've just volunteered to test and report (I'm set to receive either here, so I won't be using the new preferences). On the other hand, has anyone seen a reliable report of a new ghost being created since the fix was put in place on 6 August? I see lots of chatter, speculation, and vague mutterings about unspecified nasties, but nothing with sufficient clarity that I can turn into a properly-directed bug report. |

Anybody know yet if the new preference setting in 'resource share and graphics' to select AP, Enhanced, or both is working to suppress the ghost AP WUs if set to Enhanced only? Well, it's a step in the right direction, but it's a bit to generic for me. With my 16 hosts, I've got some I'd accept AstroPulse on and some I wouldn't. So, the only way to achieve that would be to leverage the "venue" settings and say the "School" preferences don't allow AstroPulse whereas the "Home" ones do and the "Work" preferences run Only AstroPulse.Like I've used the venues to control resource share in the past. Then I just have to fictionalize which system is where. |

Anybody know yet if the new preference setting in 'resource share and graphics' to select AP, Enhanced, or both is working to suppress the ghost AP WUs if set to Enhanced only? I can report having received NO ghosts since 6 Aug despite having received a more or less steady diet of them from 6 Aug and back; over 35 at last count. As for the new option to choose which application to run, I had not changed that from it's default setting of 'both' until a few minutes ago. So the 6 Aug fix for ghosts appears to have worked, for me at least. BTW, IMO that option really should have been implemented at the Venue level, not global. I have 3 machines that were unplugged for the summer and would have been glad to turn one of them back on just to run AP only. I have no way to do that without affecting my other machines. [edit] Looks like Mumps beat me to that last. I type slowly in the AM before my third cup of coffee. :-( [/edit] |

I use it just the way you describe, by setting different preferences for the different venues I have 1 machine (home) accepting ap+mb whereas my 2 other machines (school) only crunch multibeam. Regards, John. |

Under which section do you see this? (Processor, Disk and Memory, Network etc.) BTW, I don't know how this might affect it but what version of BOINC are you running? I'm still on 5.10.45 on 4 of my active hosts, crunch3r on two of them. Thanks! D'Oh !!! Never mind, it IS indeed under Resource Share settings, NOT under Computing Prefs. Thanks for mentioning this!! (What a dope I can be. I was looking only at the default.) |

Anybody know yet if the new preference setting in 'resource share and graphics' to select AP, Enhanced, or both is working to suppress the ghost AP WUs if set to Enhanced only? I'll talk to David to see what would be required to implement it at the venue level. Eric @SETIEric@qoto.org (Mastodon) |

Anybody know yet if the new preference setting in 'resource share and graphics' to select AP, Enhanced, or both is working to suppress the ghost AP WUs if set to Enhanced only? No need. It looks like it is. It's just that I already have "Work" and "Home" preferences, and I need to split my "Home" machines, and would like to split my "Work" machines as well. Q6600 - I want AstroPulse only. (Need to see at least short term because my first 5 AP units on this machine failed, hence the start of my hijacked thread... ) Dual P4 3.2 - Only MB 'cause it's only on ~27% of the time. Celeron 1.7 - Only MB 'cause it can't finish AP in time regardless of what the Scheduler thinks. ;-) But them also my "Work" machines... Some I'd want both, others MB only for Apples-Apples comparisons... That's 4 combinations, but aren't there only three Venues available? :-) PS: If you're still on vacation, go away. Please enjoy it... You certainly deserve some time away, regardless of the vocal, but still minority, voices! |

There are 4 venues: Home Work School unset I use unset for some of mine, sometimes it shows up as "default" -Dave |
