No, the install is quite easy. The instructions are included in the Astropulse package...

The instructions also say the ap doesn't support graphics. I like the graphics, it the main reason I run SAH. I will wait for the graphic version. Thanks anyway.

This is a point I can help you. I have planed to compile a new version which fixes some bugs. So I can also try to compile graphics. But I have found the time do do the whole compile of the new version the last weeks...
I think it is worth a try till I have compiled the graphics support...

My main reason I ran SETI is the science. I think the graphics is a nice gadget. And also AP has a very important science with a complete differnt search method(broad band search) like with the SETI Enhanched Application (narrow band search). For more informations have a look at the AP FAQ
(http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ap_faq.php) and the AP science describtion (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/ap_info.php)

The inlcuded app_info.xml's addresses now the new SETI@home Enhanced Multibeam 6.03 applications.

I downloaded your new ap for astropulse, but I don't understand your installations instructions. You say to copy your favored app_info.xma but you don't say where to copy it too. Then you say to change the owner of the files in /Library/Applications support/BOINC Data but you don't say how to do that. I would like to try your new app not that you have added graphics, but I need more compuete instructions before I am going to start pooking around in my HD.

I downloaded your new ap for astropulse, but I don't understand your installations instructions. You say to copy your favored app_info.xma but you don't say where to copy it too.

You only need to change it, if you would only crunch Astropulse only. The default is, that SETI and Astropulse would be crunched.

For the installation you can stop the BOINC client. Copy the whole content of the Astropulse package into the directory "/Library/Applications support/BOINC Data/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/" with the finder.

Then you say to change the owner of the files in /Library/Applications support/BOINC Data but you don't say how to do that. I would like to try your new app not that you have added graphics, but I need more compuete instructions before I am going to start pooking around in my HD.

In the manual are two steps described. Eventualy I must add some more detailed describtions...

The fastest way is to open the Terminal.app under Applications/Utilities/ Terminal and enter there the following command - without the both quote signs : "sudo chown boinc_master:boinc_project /Library/Application\ Support/BOINC\ Data/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/*"

Otherwise it's also posible with the finder :
- go to /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data/projects and select "setiathome.berkeley.edu" and press Apple+I. In the informations window you get the informations of the folder.
- Eventualy you must unlock the settings with the administrator password by click the key symbol right down.
- In the field "sharing and permitions" you see the owner and the group. Select the owner (boinc_master) and press the "wheel" icon at the downsite of the information field (right of the + and - icons. Select "use it for all subobjects" and OK.
- Set the permitions for all subobject also for the group boinc_master

Now you can start the BOINC client again and verify if a message in the BOINC manager happens : "...|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform" - This message indicates that the app_info.xml was found and it would be ok and used.
For safety reasons you can now select the SETI project in the BOINC manager and press the update project button.

Probably the easiest way for most people is to just reinstall the Boinc Manager application as that will correct the permissions as well.

It seems a bit over our heads (no pun intended :) But we did download your application and Tiger OS knew how to un-tar it OK. But we did not install it, as we were worried we might trash our standard WU's in our queue. Then, for no apparent reason the Boinc application started shutting itself off. Maybe some kind of hiccup. It never did that before. Can't really tell if it is still running in the background, or what. I guess a reboot is in order at least.

What happens if you start the BOINC manager again ? - If you get a message that the permisions are not right, you can fix the perimisions by the steps I have written, or reinstall the BOINC client again.

I've tried to bunlde the application with the default MacOS installer, but had no success. The permisions fixing did not work. So I am still trying to find a way for a easy installation. Eventualy I will write a shell script which does all needed steps automaticly.

Edit : Under Application / Utilities is the tool Activity Monitor. There you can easly see which processes are running on your Mac.
I recommend to stop the BOINC client, before you install the Astropulse application.

What excatly is to complicated ? - The installer ? - The install instructions ? - Is my english to bad ?

Primarly, you need to download the package and unpack it with a double click in the finder. After the package was unpacked, a new folder Astropulse-5.00_10... would appear in the finder.
Now change to this folder with the finder.
In this folder there is a file called "ap_install.commannd". Double click would start the text based installation.
The only actions you have got to do is to stop the BOINC clientif the scipt asks you. And enter your own password, which are use to login to the system, if the script prompt for it.
And after the installation script finishes. You can start the BOINC client again from the dock or applications menu.

The installation script looks like this :
                   SETI@home Astropulse installer

This script will install Astropulse 5.0 on you system

Please stop the boinc client before you install the Astropulse Application !

  BOINC client stopped (y) ? y

The installation uses sudo to install the files with the right permisions.
Eventualy you would be prompted for a password now. This password is your
own password on your system with you actual account !

  Password:

Copy files to the BOINC directory...
  Copy successfull

Setting permisions of the SETI@home projects directory...
  Set permisions successfull

Astropulse Application installation finished. Please start BOINC client again

I've fixed a wrong app_info.xml in the Astropulse 5.03 FreeBSD i386, MacOS Intel and PPC applications. I am very sorry for the failure ! Thanks to Arkayn for reporting the problem

Anyone know if there is any big differences with these two app files ?

ap503-i686-apple-darwin-r112

astropulse_5.03_i686-apple-darwin

I am currently running astropulse_5.03_i686-apple-darwin and have had WUs validate OK. I saw a note from BLURF in other threads to use r112. I just wonder if I should be using the r112 app or if it is OK to keep running the one I am.

The r112 one is an optimized app made by crunch3r for OSX.

It should knock down the processing time quite a bit.

the link to download r112 ap applications for OS10 (nunatics) give exactly the same applications as the dotsch site (same name, same size and creation date). Then I will not change

But, comparing linux and macosX similar computers, it seems to me that the optimization is not so good for macosX:

on a macpro 4*2.66 , 5130 Xeons, ap503 takes 110 000 , on a linux 4*3 GHz Xeons 5150, it takes 55 000 s, that much more than the frequency ratio. AK setiathome optimized client gives a samll advantage to the Mac. Strange.

Also, I notice from time to time that Windows optimized ap clients are faster than the mac client by a factor 2 on similar core2 (8400@2.26 GHz).

Yeah I've noticed this too and was starting to think I was crazy. Guess you have to duel boot into Windows if you want maximum performance, which is a shame.

Message 891473 - Posted: 5 May 2009, 3:59:09 UTC - in response to Message 891384.

I was able to glean this info from over at the lunatics' website when I inquired about the relative slowness of the OSX AP client:

" While not an OSX forum, we certainly did experience some of the portability issues that made AP builds tricky. This specifically involves code from the stock application fast folding routines. At the time, some optimisation was needed to be disabled to conserve numerical compatibility with stock and windows 32 bit builds for AstroPulse 5.00 and 5.03.

Raistmer since isolated at least some (hopefully all) of the offending low precision areas, and submitted some fixes to Berkeley, which should appear in the next stock release. The net effect should be to make the entire stock and optimised codebases more portable to Linux, OSX, 64 bit, and possibly other platforms, without sacrificing optimisation for future builds."

So hopefully we'll see improvement in the not too distant future.

Hmn, I was just reading that over there.

The main question is will Crunch3r have to wait for Dotsch to do his builds or will he build off of the Linux apps?
