Message 775040 - Posted: 29 Jun 2008, 2:16:00 UTC

I recently took home a P4 from my work. It's hard drive was wiped, and I doubt there is an operating system to boot too.
All necessary components are intact. Upon booting, I get the message "Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike key when ready"
When I boot to the bios, I see the details:

Product Name > Compaq Evo D510 CMT
Proccessor Type > Pentium 4 1800Mhz
Processor Speed > 1800/400Mhz
Stepping > F27
Cache (L1/L2) > 20/512KB
Memory > 512MB DDR

So my questions are:
1) What does the above error mean?
2) If there is no operating system to boot to, how can I go about installing Linux or a BOINC-compatible OS?
3) If in a miracle, I got it working, what would the RAC be, at say... 6 hours on per day?

Thanks,
Luke.

non system disc usually just means that there is nothing on the hard drive. No OS, nothing. Just put in an install disc for windoze or linux restart and it should install

Don't have any install disks... no blank discs either, will have to go out and buy some if this is what I need to do....

If you want linux you can go to ubuntu's website and they will send you the disc for free. That would be a good place to start if you havent used linux before.

Hey, thanks for the tipoff! I'll notify everyone here what happens over the next few weeks.

In the meantime: What sort of RAC can I expect from the machine specified, for it to run 6 hours a day?

Luke.

You must check if your BIOS allows to boot from a CD or DVD. Then get any modern Linux distro and install it. Once you are connected to the net, download the BOINC core client and run it. I start from a terminal, install the BOINC client in a ~/BOINC/directory, then I type ./run_client & and ./run_manager &. I then use the BOINC manager to attach to the projects I want, I am running six on my Opteron 1210, SuSE Linux 10.3. For your last question, only time can tell.

Luke.

Assuming no problems, perfect condition, running the AK-V8 SSE2 Windows client for 6 hours/day your RAC might reach ~80.

I'm not sure what you could expect from available Linux clients.

Good luck,

Hmm, "Stepping > F27" indicates a Northwood. At 1.8 GHz I'll guess RAC of about 65 with the 6 hours a day limit. My 1.6 GHz Willamette with 256K L2 peaked at 196 RAC running Windows AK_V8_SSE2 24/7, both the higher clock speed and 512K L2 on your system will help.

I have a couple of those machines, I just re-loaded them with Win2K and stuck them in the corner to help keep the room warm. Just checked, it takes one of them about 7 hours to run a 50 credit unit, with everything set to 'standard'. So thats the sort of RAC you can expect.
