Well NEZ has dropped to third place and still going down. Wonder if he will take on another project?

You all have it wrong. NEZ is really ET, who has been playing with us for years. But now we are close and he is getting nervous. So he's backing out gracefully so as not to be noticed. I'm sure of it.

Actually, I think that's what I said.

... although I think the RAC algorithm makes anything but backing down gracefully very difficult.

I have always believed NEZ to be your real ET. He has been hiding here, quietly aquiring any data that could expose him and his friends and making sure the data returned did not expose them. Once the wingman is assigned it is a simple mater to make sure his data matched NEZ. They have been here quietly doing this on any part of the sky that became necessary.

After all - No human could possibly have command of that much computing power. Just could not happen!

That would be smart, sitting on top and watching how close mankind will come?! :)
I do not agree to that, only a matter off money, space/place to stack those PC, 1000x QX9650, with a RAC off 7500= 7,500,000 and time.
Also a few prog's, that automates various 'tasks' to keep them all running.
Or own a company and install BOINC on every 'puter', in the company.
Lot's off possebillities, I think :)

NEZ now 4th by RAC. Who's up for a bet that NEZ will go dark? ;-)

(Truly doubt it though... ;-)

That would be a loss.......hope it does not come true...........

But with all the secrecy about NEZ and his covert crunching, it's hard to tell what might be going on.......

I guess I'm a little bit puzzled as to what is so special about NEZ.

Like most people who came to SETI, he came for his own reasons. Unlike most people who came here, he posted to the forums, once.

Sure, he cranked out a ton of work while he was here, but he never told us why he came, he hasn't told us he's disillusioned, he hasn't even said he won't be back.

For all we know, he's waiting for new, bigger air conditioners.

If he wants to explain himself, that is his choice. If he doesn't, it is not my place to question him.

Absent comments, I cannot draw any conclusions past "he's gone."

On many projects nearly all the biggest crunchers hide their computers. Not many homes could accommodate all the computers required to produce that amount of crunching, so you assume they're using computers at work as well. I'm not surprised they prefer to be discreet about computers at work; keeping them hidden may be a condition of being allowed to use them for BOINC.

I'm not surprised either that most of these biggest crunchers don't post on the forums. Just keeping all those computers crunching will be a big enough job without worrying as well about whether or why particular tasks have crashed or failed to validate.

The fact that NEZ has managed to retain his privacy while under a constant spotlight shows BOINC works as it was intended to.

My guess is that he's on holiday.

Ned, anytime a #1 falls out it is news to someone, and for some of us untypical crunchers that are into this way to much and occasionally post to the boards, NEZ set a standard, pretty unachievable at this time for the single user, most businesses, and even most government agencies. The mystery or really total lack of knowledge about who/what/where or why or ANYTHING about NEZ makes it more interesting to many, as well as the apparent loss of such fine efforts. As you said (and I am not in the least surprised after reading your many posts) you are puzzled about what makes NEZ special. No where in this thread do I see anyone asking NEZ to explain anything, or saying NEZ is special. BTW, by appearing to be so nonjudgmental you regularly pass judgment on many, frequently.

I can't see any indication in this thread that Ned or anyone else intended to pass judgment on NEZ or anyone else.

A cruncher's stats are a tiny glimpse into his or her life. Whenever we see a regular cruncher's stats falter we probably all hope for a moment that the person is well. That's all that really matters though we'll probably never know.

We're all free agents and BOINC is ideal for free agents.

Exactly. My intent is quite the opposite.

He came, he crunched, and now it appears that he has left quietly.

I can't criticize NEZ because there is nothing for me to base it on. He was very quiet, as is his right.

If he said "I'm leaving because this is hopeless" or "I'm leaving because this is poorly managed" or "I'm leaving because of my power bill" we'd have more to talk about.

Sorry, but I just don't see that much to discuss. I don't see anything to judge, and absent any other info, I don't see how you can say more than "a big cruncher has gone missing." The rest is pure speculation, good only for entertainment value.

All I'm trying to do is point out that, for most of us, this stuff is far less important than we want it to be.

If someone reads that and says "yeah, that's right, I should not take this too seriously" then that's a good thing.

If someone reads what I've written and says "how dare he even suggest that!" then I guess I'm okay if they want to say I'm passing judgement.

Because, ultimately, in a couple of different ways, we're all just sifting through the trash.

"Trash" in the sense that BOINC is intended to use a waste product: idle CPU cycles. Some of us actually "make" idle CPU cycles -- I don't build dedicated crunchers, but I do tend to leave machines on that might as well be turned off.

... and "Trash" in the sense that the signal we're looking for is more likely some sort of alien "I Love Lucy" episode than an intentional attempt to communicate with other intelligent life.

Dennis, please don't take my posts too seriously -- I don't.

And he made his one and only post in the BOTD thread thanking you and mentioning that the profile photo is of his wife.......

Of course, that post has now disappeared after the recent DB problems....

Actually that thread series was consumed in the forumwide cleanup. According to the document displayed on my monitor obtained thru my cable modem connected to a super secret place I'd say things will start picking up for him within 2 weeks.

Well obviously, things will start picking up for him....

He hasn't spent all these years crunching quietly just for nothing...

He's obsessed.....

But he's certainly above all the obsessiveness that crunchers on the Number Crunching and Cafe (and now, Political) forums have....

different though, those obsessions might be....;-)
