Has anyone else checked out NEZ's RAC recently on BoincStats? Almost a 50% drop in the last month and it's getting scary. I wonder what's going on? Might we soon have a new #1 participant in Seti-town?

Even that 250,000 RAC on SetiBeta doesn't explain a 600,000 drop in Seti proper... It's only 10% of his production. :-)

Maybe too hot where he lives? Having to shut down some systems? Otherwise, no clue.

NEZ currently reports as 850,000 RAC on BoincStats.... Clicking on the button to order people by RAC, I see that 2nd place goes to "Octavian", with 258,000 RAC, NEZ still sports over 3 times as much RAC as that of Octavian... wow... so no new number one kid on the block for a while....

He is in my start date class and he just started pouring it on about a month ago. He had an RAC of around 1100 last month and for a long time before that and must have got permission at his school to kick it into gear. I was first place until then.

Yeah. That's Octavian... Currently at about 253,000. And that does look it's peaking. That 30 day rolling average thingy that RAC is...

The rate that NEZ is dropping though, and the current daily returns, look like he may only settle in once he gets down to a paltry 500,000 RAC... Almost low enough to put him within shooting distance compared to the 1.4 mil he peaked at... That's only about 35-40 Q6600's from second place, depending on whose Q6600 you're talking about. :-)

To have lost 1 million from his RAC implies some big changes going on there...

In reference to the article, Misfit, what exactly does um "to ensure that the nation's nuclear weapons will continue to work correctly" mean?

Have you placed you order for a Roadrunner yet? You'd out pace NEZ

<snip, snip, snip>

– 1,000 trillion calculations per second – has long been viewed as a crucial milestone by military, technical and scientific organizations in the United States, as well as a growing group including Japan, China and the European Union. All view supercomputing technology as a symbol of economic competitiveness . . .

- It will be used principally to solve classified military problems to ensure that the nation's nuclear weapons will continue to work correctly as they age. Roadrunner will simulate the behavior of the weapons in the first fraction of a second during an explosion . . .

- Each new supercomputing generation has brought scientists a step closer to faithfully simulating physical reality . . .

. . . movin' along here ;)

Have you placed you order for a Roadrunner yet?

No, but I ordered a Coyote. Its more sophisticated than the Roadrunner, however sometimes it returns unexpected results.

And it relies on various products from "Acme Company" to attempt to catch the RoadRunner...

In reference to the article, Misfit, what exactly does um "to ensure that the nation's nuclear weapons will continue to work correctly" mean?

Many years ago a physicist friend of mine (worked within the DOE weapons group) told me he had been part of a team inspecting missile mounted nuclear weapons during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was determined that fewer than 2/3 would have worked. The materials used to construct them are, by nature, unstable and continually decaying. The chemical components can be corrosive and the electronics must withstand high radiation levels. With proper maintenance not then known these problems can be anticipated and dealt with.

This tells us at least a couple of things. How close we came to a nuclear exchange and how difficult it is to maintain a nuclear weapons technology.

I suspect the super computer can be used to predict when a weapon will require overhaul and, perhaps, the behavior of those not yet needing rework but well into their decay cycle. How many kilo/megatons TNT equivalent would they produce? How little is acceptable for the use intended?

Of interest is a question I asked regarding the smallest nuclear weapon he had seen. He said "Larger than a breadbox, smaller than truck." I said, "Yeah, thanks a lot."
