I've been toying with this for a while, but i can't seem to get past a 2.81GHz wall. The temps haven't increased much at all, so overheating isn't an issue. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3. Currently at 200MHz x 14. Any pointers?

Not am AMD guy , but people tell me until it gets hot add vcore.
My quad craps out at about 54c @3600,at 57c @3500.These temps aren't all that high but it is enough at these speeds.Kick up the volts and watch the temps..

Excellent links, thanks.
I bumped the vcore to 1.325v, and bumped the multiplier to 14.5, but then i hit the thermal limit on the stock cooler. Oh well :)

Well geez, dude.......
I did not mean to diss you about OCing an AMD earlier, but if you have an Intel, you must realize that they are better Seti crunchers......
But if ya wanna OC......you must ditch the stock cooler.........unless you get one of the new Q9450's....I'll bet that would OC nicely on the stock hardware.

Hey, if ya like AMD......go for it.

I really did not wanna give you a hard time about running an AMD.......I just know what works....for Seti, anyway.....

I have both on my farm, more AMD than Intel though. A polite suggestion for anyone that builds an AMD quad. GET rid of the stock cooler straight away, they are hopeless under load.

As for O/C'ing with stock, don't even try.

I'm not really biased as to whether i use AMD or Intel. As for the stock cooler, yes, i know stock coolers are generally crap in overclocking. I just wanted to see how far i could make it on the stock cooler :P.

Next question: What would the best aftermarket cooler for the Phenom? (no water cooling, i don't have the time to be messing with that :P).

depending on the noise level ya can handle and the space to put it in ... air cool is ok ..still after trying a few .. never seemed to get much better than < ~5C vs stock at very best.

Perhaps may I suggest trying the Corsair nautilus 500 .. very un painful venture into H2O cooling ... no mess, very quick install ... ~12 C drop in core temps (under 100% load). The Swiftech H20-220 COMPACT also seems like a pretty good prod. from various reports ... although a little more involved install wise. There are also MTech (self-contained units) that are water + TEC .. sure there are perhaps others as well.

Not perhaps what you asked ..

Nice, I want one. My quad is getting too HOT. Price no object, am going to check if available in UK.

Thanks for link.

Edit........Damn, checked numerous UK sites & every one refers to US dealers.

Try a Thermaltake Tribe. It is an external watercooler for the CPU, and it is a complete kit. I got one on eBay for $50 a few months back. It's an older system, but works great.

Thanks for the tip John. However, I'm personally dubious about using liquid on my rigs. I'm going to see if Ultra have any European distributers as I really like the look & idea of that chiller.

Msattler:

I personally find it a bit irritating, that you _have_ to jump into every AMD thread and tell the users asking for help with the hardware that they allready have, to buy Intel instead.

Its of absolutely no help to them, and thus irrelevant noise.

My Phenom which is currently running at 2400, 2500, 2600, and 2700 MHz, on the different cores, and at 2400Mhz on the northbridge, is currently on a RAC of approx 4150 (still climbing but very slowly now), which pretty much equals many Core2 Quads at 2400 or even 2666 MHz.
This is with the SSE3 app, where the Core computers run SSSE3 or SSE4.1 apps. which are probably more efficient.
There are Core2 Quads, that score ~300 point higher in RAC, at ~ same freq, and probably some even better, but in general Phenom matches the Cores. Mine is even only on 800Mhz DDR2, where there is 1066MHz DDR2 available for Phenoms.

So to say the core2's are much better at SETI is an overstatement. The reality of the matter is that the Core2 architecture overclocks much more easilly, but that does not make the Phenom bad at Seti, because it actually performs very close to the Core2's at Seti on a clock for clock basis.

My point is: If you don't have any help to provide, then let the matter rest, no matter what your personal opinion may be. Its of no help to go into a Phenom thread, just to say "Buy Intel".

If your RAC is near its peak at 4150, then I have to disagree with you that the Phenom matches a Q6600 as my RAC is at ~4450 and that is only using the equivalent of 3 cores, the other core is running Einstein (RAC 610) and AP units on Beta site (RAC 430). i.e. resource share is 300:60:40.

Winterknight:

I probably forgot to mention, but my Phenom does other work to, Seti is set to about 80%, and the rest is spread out between numerous other projects. Many of them are sadly not delivering work right now, but I don't think 4150 is the real peak.

That was not my main point of the post. When peoble ask for help for a Phenom system, they allready own, its not any kind of help to tell them to get another system.

I think most know the shortcomings of the Phenom. Its not as fast as Core2, and uses more power. But if you have a computer with a Phenom in it, for whatever reason, peoble should respect that, and not make mocking remarks.
