What exactly does the "In progress" mean on the server staus page? Is it the total number of work units that have been handed out, the number of work units waiting to be validated, or both? I ask because I notice it has varied wildly here recently, 3.6 mil a little while ago to 1.8 mil now.

That number is not an exact number, its derivation is through some quick and dirty code. It was done that way to give us an indicator of availablitlty. For exact numbers we would have to poll the database and that is not something we want to do ...

I've wondered about this since the page was put up, but figured (like most things) nobody else would know whassup with something that's as wonky as those figures. ;)

I've refreshed that page a few times and seen the numbers jump up and down by many 100K and millions respectively, so I figured it couldn't be measuring anything meaningful yet.
