Hi everybody.
I got a problem since I installed Ubuntu 8.04 and the new BOINC and Seti-client on my computer. My workunits always get returned with a "compute error" and with exist status 11. What is going on here? And what can I do about it? What does extit status 11 mean?
I didn't have this problem with Ubuntu 7.10, or in my Boinc in windows XP that is running on the same computer, so I think it is not a hardware problem.

This error message menas, that the SETI application crashs.
Could you please cd into your BOINC directory (where the BOINC client is located) and post the output of the command : "ldd projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome-5*"
Have you overclocked the system ? - Was the system stable running SETI, before you have upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 ?
Which SETI@home application do you use ? - Could you please try to upgrade (reinstall) the newest SETI application from the Ubuntu Software repository.

Thanks for your reply. Iĺl answer your questions one by one:
Th command "ldd projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome-5*" gives a "no such file" reply. But when I change the command to "ldd projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome*" this is what i get:
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xb7fda000)
libssl.so.0.9.8 => /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libssl.so.0.9.8 (0xb7f87000)
libcrypto.so.0.9.8 => /usr/lib/i686/cmov/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 (0xb7e45000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libdl.so.2 (0xb7e41000)
libfftw3f.so.3 => /usr/lib/libfftw3f.so.3 (0xb7d5c000)
libnsl.so.1 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libnsl.so.1 (0xb7d44000)
librt.so.1 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/librt.so.1 (0xb7d3b000)
libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0xb7d25000)
libstdc++.so.6 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 (0xb7c32000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libpthread.so.0 (0xb7c1a000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libm.so.6 (0xb7bf5000)
libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0xb7bea000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0xb7a9b000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0xb7fdb000)
I have not overclocked my system and it was running flawlessly on Ubuntu 7.10.
I am running the boinc-client 5.10.45 and the seti application 5.13+csv20060510-3, which I installed using Synaptic. I believe this is the most recent application. I already tried to uninstall and install again, but this doesn't help.
I hope you can think of a possible solution.
Many thanks in advance,
Willard

Could you both please try to do a "reset project" via the BOINC manager. I am not shure, if the old 5.13 appliation you are using, cause the problems.
With the project reset, the old application would be deleted and the new offical SETI application would be automaticly downloaded. - I hope, that this version would ran better.

I have resetted the project, but to no avail. By the look of it, it is still running on the old 5.13 application and doesn't update by resetting the project. Is there another way to update the seti application? Or is there another solution to this problem?
Greetings

I tried this and since i did it 3/4's of the returned units are still corrupt which is an improvemnet on all them corrupt but at this point it is a waste to be returning so many corrupt units so i think it best i just forget about Seti :(
i thank you for your time/suggestion
Brendan
p.s. also as noted by willard resetting didnt appear to update |

Stop the BOINC cleint, cd into the directory, where the BOINC client is installed, and remove the file proejcts/setiathome.berkeley.edu/setiathome* and projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu/app_info.xml.
Start the BOINC client with the parameter "-update_prefs" or do a "update project" within the BOINC manager.

I did the above then all it would do is download and instantly send the work unit back, so I reinstalled via Synaptic and so far it appears to be working
thanks you for all your help it is appreciated, i will post again when i am sure it is finally working correctly

I've checked all your WUs, and they are used all the 5.13 SETI application. So it looks the detinstall of the Ubuntu and use of the offical one, as I have recommened, has not worked. I recommend to try this too.
Also I am not shure, if the randomly crahses your system do, eventualy show us a hardware problem. I would also recommend you to let a hardware diag suite running against your system and check CPU, Memory, Cache,...

I managed to get the new seti-application running (5.27) It was just a matter of uninstalling boinc and downloading only the boinc manager and boinc client and not the seti application. By attaching the seti-project the boinc-manager downloaded the right seti application.
Now Iĺl just wait and see if this helps to minimize the amount of error results. Iĺl get back to you.
For now, many thanks for the help and suggestions.

Problem solved!
By installing only the boinc-client and the boinc manager and letting boinc itself install the seti application it seems to run fine now. So my advice to every Ubuntu user is to install only the boinc client and the boinc manager (using Synaptic or "apt-get install") and not to install the seti application.
Thanks for helping me.

I still have 5 WUs left on my Linux (UBUNTU) Box.
But they all call for 36 hours est. crunch times on them.
When I upgrade I'm putting in Crunchers 2.4v code for this old MMX box.
If I were to dump those WUs how will that effect my RAC and other crunchers/ Wingmen?

Yes i think it would affect your RAC It will make it lower and it will also affect your Maximum daily WU quota per CPU.
