Message 755082 - Posted: 18 May 2008, 13:34:49 UTC

Hi,
finally succeeded in getting boinc running on a gentoo box using Gentoo: package name sci-misc/boinc (version 5.10.45).
When connecting to the server, the server responds with a i586-pc-lunux-gnu' platform not found message. So no download of a new task.
I found some discussions in the other threads about using -mcpu to overcome this, but as I'm a kind of newbee with linux, I wonder if somebody could explain?
Txs,
John

You can use i686 compiled binary for your CPU. The -mcpu switch you're talking about is for compiling your own BOINC from the source code. In this case, I would just recommend downloading the appropriate optimized application. There is a whole thread about it here.
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=31810

I am using Crunch3r's from this page on my Linux PC now.
http://calbe.dw70.de/linux32.html

Stop BOINC before installing it. Once you install the optimized application, restart BOINC and you should be able to get new tasks.

OK, some things you should change:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86"
(if you want an unstable ~x86 package, add it to the package.keywords file)

CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
(changing this might break the system, but works mostly fine)

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium4 -mno-tls-direct-seg-refs"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

Hi,
Should I make the change in the file you mentioned (package.keywords)?

Hi Desti,
Ok, I managed to find out that a had to make those changes to make.conf. After that I deinstalled Boinc. Recompiled it again and now it works!
Te only issue I have is that there are no graphics when pressing the button "show graphics".

Greetings and Txs for your help!
John
