Or if you are a 'build it yourselfer'.......
A server based 16 core beast running the fastest Xeons........

That is more my style

What OS would you run the beast on?

XP x64 of course.

That would be fine...

I believe xp will handle 8 cores tell me if I am wrong.

Anything I can understand. I am not a MAC person.

To run 16 cores would take a Linux box or a very expensive enterprise windows server or windows data server.

16 Cores, YES YES YES!!! (don't look at my web cam right now)

This is simple......depending on your budget.....get the best core 2 cpu you can afford......get the best Asus mobo you can afford......RAM does not have to be expensive, get the fastest timings, not the fastest speed.......get the best cpu cooler you can afford.......load up the new Wet Noodle app.......

And OC the bejeesus out of it..........

BTW, the advice still holds even if you do not wish to enter the 'dark world' of OCing.......

Money is no object, what should I get?

Windows enterprise server cost several thousand dollars maybe 10,000 dollars linux is free

To understand my SIG...
You must watch the movie "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"... George and Gracy play a major part in the plot of the movie.

Have you considered installing the optimized app on your hosts? You could boost your production by ~50% just by switching apps! And it's free !!!

Get a 4 cpu socket mother board and load it with the best quad cores around and stuff it with memory and download the enterprise server os from microsoft and start crunching.

Yes......it is mind boggling.......and if you buy it today, in a week it shall be obsolete.......

But all nonsense aside......

If you want a simple choice, go ahead and get the most powerful rig that Apple is offering today......offa da shelf.....you shall not be dissapointed from what I have seen.......

If you wanna do the homework and put together a 16 core monster.....it will take some time and research.....

Let us know how you wish to continue......

Sorry to add to your headache......I have one too now, 'cuz the kitties are asking me how to get a better cruncher, and I don't have the jing........

For Windows OSes, XP Home only supports a single socket with any number of cores. XP Pro and XP x64 support two sockets with any number of cores (currently at 8 with two quad cores).

Server 2003 R2 Standard supports 4 processors total, regardless of the number of sockets. Server 2003 R2 Enterprise supports 8 processors total, regardless of the number of sockets.

Server 2003 R2 Datacenter x86 supports 32 processors and Server 2003 R2 Datacenter x64 supports 64 processors.

And yes, Linux is cheaper than all the above options and should support up to 128 processors if I remember correctly.

Ozz,

Shouldn't that read:

"Server 2003 R2 Standard supports 4 socketed processors total, regardless of the number of cores."

and so on? I've certainly seen servers on the market with S2K3 Standard and 4 quad-core processors, for 16 cores in total: Dell R900, for one.

Also, last time this topic came up in discussion (while I was researching for what turned into this post), I got a PM from John Galt 007 to add the information that Windows 2003 Small Business Server only supports 2 socketed CPUs, again presumably at least up to quad-core for 8 cores in total.

And to add:

Vista behaves like XP: the 'Home' versions support 1 CPU, any number of cores, and the 'Business' versions (aka 'Professional') support 2 CPUs.

I'm afraid I don't have a version list for Windows Server 2008 yet.

[Edit]They may have changed their licensing model for 2003. Microsoft's own TechNet article lists maximum CPU support but does not distinguish if it is 64 sockets or 64 CPUs, etc.

[Edit] Microsoft Small Business Server is based on "per socket" and not "per core" like Microsoft's consumer OSes. See the note at the very bottom of this page for more information.

Off topic, but also notice that Intel's Pentium Pro and Pentium II processors were found to have a TLB erratum that causes them to not work in dual CPU configurations with Server 2003 (because that is the only OS that has the "fix" to not use both so as to avoid crashes).

Hi,
I use two dualbord SOYO 5TH2 (two sockets) with two pentium 200MHz. Both runs with NT4 Worstation and with NT4-Server without any problems.
As far as I know Microsoft does not count the cores, the cpu's(sockets) are counted. If I have a quad socket mainboard and I use Quadcore cpus, so I can have 4cpus with summary 16core ad this should run on the old NT4 without any problems. I'm building a new Xeon 8core at the moment and I will try out Fedora9 and Server2008 from Microsoft... we will see...
