How does one volunteer to become a mod on the SETI forums?

The new moderation regime based on renewing mods every few months will require a large pool of volunteers (unless the same mods are re-employed again and again....)

How do people volunteer should they wish to serve their fellow members?

What skills or qualities do they need?

Is public volunteering possible?

In order:

1) Ask, email Eric, and avoid spam filter.

2) See number 1.

3) Nothing whatsoever really. History suggests that an utter inability to distance one's self emotionally from the position is a pre-requisite.

4) See number 1 again.

The best post i've seen so far today...Finally the mystery has been solved.

I will not be volunteering...and if i am robotically chosen...i will not serve...Besides...I have never been able to penetrate Eric's Email fortress...and i won't be trying to any time soon.

I have once tried to volunteer, but apparently my mail didn't get through... I didn't try again, there has to be a better way...

Couldn't you just PM the new Forum Admin?

Why would the anonymous Forum Admin accept "friend" requests? It shows a lack of impartiality, or at least the appearance of it. Bad idea.

He or she will probably accept anyone who asks.

That sort of cheapens the idea that someone is a "friend" doesn't it?

Well why i asked the admin to be my friend is a secret..but I can assure you that everyone on my friend list is there because there is something i like about them.

Does that answer your question?

It's the easiest way there is to make a friend...Just push a button...make a friend...You won't even have to leave the house.

Eric has stated he has no role anymore in the forums until it comes around to be his turn again. The new Admin's email address is: setiforums@ssl.berkeley.edu

I think that the best way of appointing new mods would be to have nominations from regular posters, and Admin.

Then Admin should hold a vote for a period of at least 2 weeks.

Admin might have a veto if they have a strong reason for a certain person not being a mod.

I think anyone who categorically did not want to stand could withdraw from the nominations.

If we are to get 3 new mods on the 1st July, they could have a list of 5 or 6 to choose from.

This idea needs some refinement, but I think that it is a plan.

Since the new whatevertheyare is anonymous, there is no way one would ever know who it is, or is not, at any given time.

So emailing Eric is just as good as any other method, and it might be him. So who knows?

Eric has said it is not him and he no longer is involved with the forums.

People say lots of things that may or may not be true.

Unless he plans on informing us when he becomes the whateveritis again, and thus not being anonymous, the point still stands.
