I know It sounds, Extreme, But believe Me, I need to do It this way here, I don't have just ordinary dust, I usually have a certain amount of caked on dust and cat hair, I have a swamp cooler that cools the house and so the humidity gets raised to between 45% and 65%,

Ahh the old evaperative coolers. We had one here for the hot days as well, but just a portable unit. The higher humidity was a nusance, and I agree that does tend to make dust more sticky than normal. We now use a reverce cycle electric unit that costs almost nothing to run, but we are in a much cooler area than you are.

As long as the fins are kept clean then I guess it does not matter how you do it.

Only during the monsoon season(August to September) does the humidity become a real problem around here. Mines a window mount that's not in the best location which would be near the middle of the house in the wall next to a window(The window's too narrow for the coolers duct), Where It's now at is usually too cool as a result, It'll have to stay where It's at for a while as money is going to be tight still until about March of 2009, As then I could possibly hire a pro to alter the houses wall, install the cooler, caulk the walls and paint the entire house. One guy here said He could do the job(He used to do rehab for the park until the old owners sold the park, He was let go as He didn't fit in with the new owners plans), Then never came over to give Me an estimate.

I am running a ANTEC 900 case with 5 fans, and the Thermaltake Big Typhoon on the Q6600 2.4 ghz quad and 2 nvidia 8800 GT's oc. The core temp of the cpu at 100% never goes above 36c, and when the machine is just sitting, the core runs at 21c.

Two of the case fans are three speed fans but are set at Low by default and I have left them there. The case comes with an adaptor for one more internal 120 mm fan but at this point I don't see a need for it. The Typhoon has 120 mm fan and heatpipes.

By comparison, my wife's new dual core 6500 without all the case fans and the factory fan that comes with the cpu runs at 36c before she starts actually doing anything. I have seen it run up as high as 42c. Airflow is the key, and the antec 900 case fan is pretty good. Two front 120 mm fans, one 200 mm roof fan, one 100 mm rear fan, one side 120 mm fan (I am only running a 90 mm) and space for one 120 mm internal aimed at the cpu (I don't have it installed)
Additionally, I am running a 750 watt power supply with a 120 mm fan.

Your Q6600 should just luv the 32 bit SSSE3x version.....enjoy.

If you have any questions about installing it correctly.....just ask.

What is the best air-cooling heat sink/fan combination for my Q6600? I ask this question because it seems that the people who have discussions here on the board are quite knowledgeable and I think they would know the best way to air-cool my quadie.
Thanks in advance
Paul

My temps are 69c with seti running and 42c with seti not running.
I've ordered a ThermalTake V1 due to review in Maxmium PC magazine it will be here tomorrow.

My temps are now 48c since I have installed the ThermalTake V1 cooler running the new AKV8 app and about 30c at idle. But now my second sli slot got blown and I have a ticket with XFX concerning the motherboard.

Not long after I installed the New Kingwin RVT-12025 heatsink the motherboard died, Why? The old heatsink seems to have been at fault and It's toast too(Don't buy either an Ultra ChillTEC or a Vigor Gaming Monsoon II(or Monsoon II Lite either), I've had to toss out 6[2 Ultras and 4 Vigors] of them as neither Vigor or Ultra will honor the warranty on them when the cable and the controller burn up), I have one left and I hope It'll last until May 30th or whenever My next Kingwin heatsink arrives, I did keep the 80mm fans as there good still at least. The Kingwin went in smoothly and the ga-965p-ds3 is being replaced with a donated MSI 975X Platinum v.2 motherboard that a fellow frog is sending My way(It's FREE). :) At least the case was able to be dusted out, Even If the replacement switch sticks, I'll have to dremel It one day, maybe.

I have the new upgraded app installed now, have had for about two days. It has caused my machine to freeze once, and we had two power failures here because of the snow storms, so I am a little behind on processing, but you were right, it has increased my average crunch time from just over 3hr 30 minutes to about 1 hr 24 minutes.

I have noticed spikes in my heat usage, now I run around 38C with the new app and firing on all four cylinders. I also noticed that the app takes over all my memory. I have it set in the preferences for 50% swap file usage and 50% memory usage when idle, but it still grabs as much as 94% today. I shut it down and restarted Boinc Manager because I didn't want a computer crash.

Just wanted to note that the temperatures are still not over 40C even with the new app. Koodos to Antec designers.

I think I need a newer case mine is about 6 or 7 years old with 5-80mm fans my system temp is 25c If I had a newer case with 4-120mm fans I think my chip would be even cooler. I don' have a memory thing my rig uses over 1.5gb of memory and I have 8gb installed. Snow storms...I did not get any snow this past winter I had to run the air conditioner some.

SETI used very little memory (ram) 35-40 megs or so per CPU. Are you running somthing BOINC besides SETI to use up all that ram your packing?
