AK V8 Linux SSSE3

That looks really fast. Thought we'd finally get a jump on the linux guys, now it looks like I'll have to become one.....

We'll just have to wait and see... compiling it on linux is a real pain... i can tell you that for sure! atm i'm still trying to get a host prepared that is able to compile a SSE4 app.... that's what i was doing all day...

For the FreeBSD guys there will probably be only a SSE3/SSSE3 app ... but we're not even there yet... have to do the 64 bit apps as well...

@Crunch3r -- I guestimate that if the client scales linearly across all 8 cores you could hit RAC 20,000 with that SSSE3 client.

I haven't looked, is there a better paying project ?

Sure ! take a look at my RAC at Riesel Sieve http://boinc.rieselsieve.com/orig/show_host_detail.php?hostid=39901
abc@home is paying better and lot's of other too...

So while i do all this porting stuff is loose credits :( Ya'll have to pay that back ! :P

Anyhow, i'm rebooting my host in about 5 mins. and run the SSSE3 app on a native installation (fedora core 8 x64)full blow on all 8 cores ...
cuz i don't trust any result comming from a vmware machine at all regarding completion times...

EDIT

ok i'm running the SSSE3 32 bit app now on a native linux (fedora core8 x64) 8 instances at once ...

some resutls got messed up and on the hostlist it shows that i detached...LINK Intel dual quad core xeon 5365@3 GHz running 32 bit SSSE3 on fedora core 8 x64

Yeah, something got messed up... been running the crap code ... sorry for that one ...

I've rebooted the host to windows again... since i've been missing the latest episode of BSG... i had to watch it now an i do feel sorry about that :(

As soon as i realised that i've been running crap code i thought i could at least watch the latest bsg on the linux side...

well that didn't work out... so i had to face a choice and watching the latest bsg episode won... i feel sorry for that ..

i'll try to give it a shot tomorrow again.

Another unfortunate development during a time when key persons are making strong personal commitments and efforts on behalf of the community & project.

Frustrating, disheartening & counter-productive : >(

This is a sad situation in many ways.

Is the Linux port dead in the water or is progress being made behind the scenes?

Hi all!

Just peeking in, at the right moment as it seems :o)

Props for porting Alex' code, that stuff is seriously fast!

If you want to check out the new code under Linux, there's some kind of band-aid available:

- Install a recent version of wine. (I used 0.9.61 under Debian)
- Use wine to run the windows BOINC installer
- Terminate BOINC and locate the installed files (should be in "~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/BOINC" )
- copy "account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml" from your linux install
This spares you attaching from the command line :o)
- start boinc with the following command line: wine boinc.exe --no_gui_rpc

The no_gui option is required, because boinc will otherwise fail while trying to set up the RPC interface.

- wait for the various downloads to happen
- Install the Windows version of Alex' code into projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu
- restart boinc like above.

Known Problems:

- reported CPU times are always 0 seconds, because wine doesn't support the required system call (yet)
- crunching isn't done at nice level 19 (background priority)
- You can't continue crunching your current linux WUs because BOINC detects a platform change and would discard them. No use in copying over files from your linux install.
- No automatic startup of BOINC at boot time. I'll fix that shortly.

Happy Crunching!

P.S: I'm running this host under wine ATM. (The reported OS is WinXP) if you want to check it out.

Regards Hans
