How does this bicycle wheel work? Where can I buy a bike like that one in the picture?

Reading the description, that's a bit of a dud!

The idea described is to use a bearing race that holds the wheel rim, rather than use bearings enclosed in a hub at the wheel centre.

The claim of increased strength may be true for where the wheel to road contact point is close to the bearing to rim contact point. However, that is very much not the case for that cyclist sketch.

There will be a large penalty in requiring a very much stronger rim to survive the roll & yaw twisting forces to be expected at the bearing attach point.

A good alternative I've seen is a unicycle motorcycle where you and the motor sit in the centre of the (large) one wheel. Great idea except imagine what happens for an emergency stop...

Still, an interesting idea to reinvent the wheel. We've had nothing much new since the hovercraft and caterpillar track.

Keep searchin',
Martin

Predictions from 1992? That's 16 years ago.

Those predictions are already obsolete.
If I were you, I wouldn't believe anything on that page.

Billy Lane has been building "choppers" with this wheel concept for at least 10 yrs.

Something like this perhaps?

Talking about bikes, it seems like the major effort has been to shave off that last ounce of vehicle weight and really boost that price. It seems like a better solution would be to encase the bike and rider in a weatherproof streamlined skin that would resemble a hot dog (wiener) or something. Also it would be nice to include a spinning wheel that would store energy to smooth out hills. At traffic lights one could keep pedaling to speed up the storage wheel. I don't have the solution, yet, for hot days.

Sort off...

The more "down to Earth" version is:

Kerry Mclean

Another variant is:

Unicycle-Motorbike-Segway Hybrid

and

Embrio combines motorcycle, unicycle, balls
