So what's Boinc analyzing that classic isn't or is it simply a different platform doing the same? |

OK thanks, if it's the same science as classic what do you make of the following post: "in classic, each work unit is sent out DOZENS of times. They only need 3 for verification but they don't have enough work to supply 500,000 active users so they just copy the work units and send them out again to keep the crunchers happy." http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=4630 It's the 5th post. If this is true then we're really not working on anything new, just spinning our wheels with the same WU's time and time again? |

The cheerleaders tend to leave out that part.... |

There are alot of other down to earth projects utilizing Boinc which one can consider using the Boinc platform. At least until Seti gets it together. A rainbow is made up of many colors. Account frozen... |

In classic the burning desire is to get a high completed count. So, the original plan was to send out the work 3 times and stop, but they had issues were there were complaints that the machines were going idle. So, now they send out the work, people get the bean incremented, and feel good. But, as stated, most of the work done is not neccessary. > It's the 5th post. Spin them wheels... > Seti/Boinc today is sending the same WU data as those that were crunched by classic Actually, they may be using the same tapes as Classic; and the work is comming from the same place in the sky over the same frequency range. However, the analysis is not quite the same. We don't, to my knowledge, have a good techincal article discussing the differences. So, the end results science is the same between SETI@Home Classic and SETI@Home (Powered by BOINC), but the actual content of the newer BOINC is not identical to the older version.
For BOINC Documentaion: Click Me! |
