It won't work on the stable release....

A couple responses I got to this issue from other threads suggested moving to Debian unstable, or changing to a different distro. Unfortunately, those are just 'lipstick on the pig' solutions... staying at 5.8.16 appears to be the only logical solution at this point.

Run BOINC version 5.8.16 instead. Should work fine with the older GLIB.

I guess another option would be to compile your own BOINC from source. Too much hassle for me. Until they statically link the boinc executables, there will be some GLIB dependency.
