Hi, I'm trying to connect to the SETI@Home project at work so that my work PC can and do some SETI units while its idle as its on 24/7 anyway. I've installed BOINC and given it our proxy server settings (which I know are correct), but it doesn't want to connect. I've tried a number of other projects too, just incase SETI was down, but it wont connect to anything. Any ideas? I've done some Googleing, but cant find any solutions or advice. Here are messages: 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.45 for windows_intelx86 09/04/2008 10:46:17||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9] 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 09/04/2008 10:46:17||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Memory: 503.48 MB physical, 1.44 GB virtual 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Disk: 37.26 GB total, 12.85 GB free 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Local time is UTC +1 hours 09/04/2008 10:46:17||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 251.74MB 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 453.13MB 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 09/04/2008 10:46:17||This computer is not attached to any projects 09/04/2008 10:46:17||Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions 09/04/2008 10:47:32||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 09/04/2008 10:47:33||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 09/04/2008 10:47:35||Access to reference site failed - check network connection or proxy configuration. 09/04/2008 10:49:41||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 09/04/2008 10:51:18||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 09/04/2008 10:52:24||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php 09/04/2008 10:52:35||Fetching configuration file from http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/get_project_config.php 09/04/2008 10:52:43||Fetching configuration file from http://www.primegrid.com/get_project_config.php 09/04/2008 10:56:07||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php |

Hi, You are being blocked by your proxy (note that the reference site could not be reached). Various different versions of BOINC have different flavors of the bug about not being able to reach past some proxies. This is based on the underlying bugs in the communications library we are using to get past the proxies. In short, you will probably need to try a few different builds from http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/dl/ to find one that works. Further help will require the type of Proxy your office has installed. Does anyone have more specific information about what versions might work? BOINC WIKI |

Does anyone have more specific information about what versions might work? The 5.10.45 that he uses should work, as long as he uses the correct proxy setup. And else he'll have to use the <force_auth> flag. I already explained that on the BOINC Dev forums. For that information he will need to know what method of authentication the proxy server uses, thus ask the IT department. |

Hummm, I've moved forward a little. I've created myself a cc_config.xml file with this 'force_auth' option in it as follows: -------------------------8<-------------------------- <cc_config> <options> <force_auth>basic</force_auth> </options> </cc_config> -------------------------8<-------------------------- This seems to have allowed my completed work to be uploaded back to SETI (I had downloaded work by connecting with a raw internet connection that we have in the office yesterday - but cant afford to do this everytime SETI needs to connect). It also appears to have updated my computers stats page at SETI with some information about this PC. However it now seems to be struggling to download further work. I've been told our proxy is very tight and only allows certain ports and protocols. Unfortunately the person that set it up is no longer here... And the people that admin it now, are still trying to figure it out. If I can upload, should I be able to download? Here are my latest messages if they help in anyway: 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Starting BOINC client version 5.10.45 for windows_intelx86 10/04/2002 13:47:39||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Libraries: libcurl/7.18.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8e zlib/1.2.3 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Data directory: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9] 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx 10/04/2002 13:47:39||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Memory: 503.48 MB physical, 1.44 GB virtual 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Disk: 37.26 GB total, 12.70 GB free 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Local time is UTC +1 hours 10/04/2002 13:47:39|SETI@home|URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 4298577; location: (none); project prefs: default 10/04/2002 13:47:39||No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 251.74MB 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 453.13MB 10/04/2002 13:47:39||Preferences limit disk usage to 9.31GB 10/04/2002 13:47:45|SETI@home|Started download of 26fe08aa.9263.13978.11.8.66 10/04/2002 13:47:56|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 26fe08aa.9263.13978.11.8.66: http error 10/04/2002 13:47:56|SETI@home|Backing off 7 min 45 sec on download of 26fe08aa.9263.13978.11.8.66 10/04/2002 13:48:04|SETI@home|Started download of 26fe08aa.9263.13978.11.8.22 10/04/2002 13:48:05|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 26fe08aa.9263.13978.11.8.22: http error 10/04/2002 13:48:05|SETI@home|Backing off 7 min 25 sec on download of 26fe08aa.9263.13978.11.8.22 10/04/2002 13:48:33|SETI@home|Started download of 26fe08ab.19197.261461.13.8.182 10/04/2002 13:48:37|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of 26fe08ab.19197.261461.13.8.182: http error 10/04/2002 13:48:37|SETI@home|Backing off 5 min 55 sec on download of 26fe08ab.19197.261461.13.8.182 10/04/2002 13:49:05|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Hummm, I've moved forward a little. I've created myself a cc_config.xml file with this 'force_auth' option in it as follows: Once you have changed the config file you will not have to keep doing it every time it needs to connect. As for the upload download question I believe they use different ports but am not 100% certain. Good luck and I am certain someone else here will be able to help you as they have so many other people including me. |

Understood. However, I downloaded the work units (yesterday) by physically disconnecting from the corporate domain, and plugging into a raw internet connection that we have setup for visitors to use if they require internet access for whatever reason. I can do this at any time, but its a painful and time wasting operation. The changes I've made above seem to have sorted out uploading though which is a step forward.
Hummm, not good... I suspect you are right based on the connection issues I'm seeing here. If this is the case, I think I'm doomed. Any other thoughts? |

At this moment Seti is down again, so no one can get work. Keep an eye on the frontpage news for things like that. The upload&download and report module in BOINC use the same port, TCP 80 by default. So they should use whatever port you set up in your proxy settings. |

Both Upload and download use http port 80 (http) or 443(https) upload uses http_put and download use http_get. They also use the same port for updates. BOINC WIKI |

Hi, I had the same problem with proxy server. I changed name of proxy server to IP address of proxy and after that it workes. |
