I'm running Seti on my Gentoo boxen, and out of the blue, I've started getting segfaults whenever it tries to report a workunit. This is a problem, because now I can't start up Boinc at all, or it immediately segfaults.

Here's the end of the output from manually starting the client:

31-Mar-2008 22:54:54 [SETI@home] Sending scheduler request: To report completed tasks. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 3 completed tasks
SIGSEGV: segmentation violation

Exiting...

This is absolutely destroying my crunching rate, as this box is my main workhorse (Quad AMD 64). Does anyone have any suggestions for where I should go from here?

What BOINC client version do you use ?
I had simliar problems yesterday on my Windows Box. The BOINC client crashed at upload. The problem was caused by a problem in the network (no default route, proxy server and the project servers was not reachable). Could you please verify your network connection.

I'm running boinc-5.10.28. (The latest version hasn't made it into the Gentoo package library yet.)

The network on this box is fine... no configuration changes made in the last six months or so, and it still works fine for everything else.

Do you get the errors permanently or only sometimes ?
Does the error still happens ?

The error is happening every time I launch Boinc, with only minor variations in the message, due to different blocks of memory having been allocated for the process.

Beautiful! Thank you, this solved it. I picked the solution of overriding the IP of the server in my hosts file, so that I can easily revert it later, and it's working beautifully.

Just FYI, I just tested, and the problem with LHC is resolved. I turned off the override of their IP, and restarted the client, and it uploaded the workunit just fine.

I tried this, because I noticed that one of my windows boxen had managed to upload it's workunit finally, that had been stuck for a couple days.
