I learned a new bad word today. And, much to my surprise when I reviewed my George Carlin he made no reference to it at all. I suppose that is what I found so surprising. Is that a person as skilled as he would miss such an obvious insult. Here he went and did that whole thing on bad words and he missed one! Of course, perhaps it is because it is a bad word only if it is used in close proximity to a verb ... you know, like, in a sentence with other objects, nouns and things like that. Of course, I am not even sure about that ... all I know is that I used this word in what I though was a very general way and bad things seemed to happen. I thought I would talk about it her in politics because some of us have heard of political correctness. This is where we constrain our speech so that we ensure we don't offend someone. Now being autistic I have a pecularly logical mind and when I was young I was told to ask questions when I did not know something ... only to be told the very next time I asked a question that I should not ask questions. But grwn up now I usually know how to not ask questions that will cause problems ... but, this time I was quite surprised that the use of the word could be so ... um ... bad. Now there is a place you can use this word, but it is kind of a secret ... you only really find out about this place if you use the bad word in a sentence and someone notices. Then you have to notice in the notice where the secret place is ... you can't really go there ... it is like that "secret undisclosed location" we keep hearing about. Maybe that is the place where this stuff all goes ... But if you do notice the link you can send an e-mail to whomever occupies this place and ask why what happened, happened. Of course you can't even really talk about the bad word even there, Because, following rules is more important than asking questions ... or answering them ... and so, asking why what happened, happened, I learned that Rules Are Rules ... and everyone has to follow the rules. And as we know, absolute rules are good rules. Because then we do not have to use judgement ... or discretion ... Rules Are Rules ... A six year old gives a friend an aspirin, violation of drug policy and the tot goes off to jail for drug dealing ... that will teach her to try to be kind! Rules are Rules. But life as we know it moves on. And the most refreshing thing is that I have a new word I can use when I hit my thumb with the hammer... I would tell you what the word is, but, I don't want to go to that bad place again. So I can't tell you what that word is ... because I would likely use it in a sentence and that is not something that one would do in polite company. So the bad word is a secret word, and if you say it you can wind up in the "secret undisclosed location" ... What worries me even more is that if I use it in a sentence and name a person, would they disappear? |

I learned a new bad word today. And, much to my surprise when I reviewed my George Carlin he made no reference to it at all. You'll have to let me know what it is... the "cuss jar" here in the shop has about $80 of mine in it... ($1 / expletive). If I could sneak a new one in that isn't on the list, it could save me a small fortune when working on MS stuff. :) (Good to see you again, Paul) |

I learned a new bad word today. And Carlin did not include it in his 'dirty words'? LOL...... "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I haven't seen the name of this thread originator for two years, three years? - you know - the author of the Seti Wiki, etc. I even see the same avatar as before. |

I haven't seen the name of this thread originator for two years, three years? - you know - the author of the Seti Wiki, etc. I even see the same avatar as before. That is because the author of this thread has not been here for almost exactly two years. And, as I cast my eyes about, I wonder where the fun place that SAH used to be is today. At any rate, I need not linger long ... After a run of 3 days and 2 hours and 19 minutes, the RAID adapter agrees that the RAID Array in the new computer is fine. I have been working my e-mail and the web sites I normally read and that seems to be working well, my iTunes library seems intact though I do need to back it off to DVDs ... at least I have enough room to add the last 200 or so CDs I have left to load (Mozart complete 155 CDs and three 40 CD sets of Handel, Back, and whathisname) ... Though, I think I would still like to get my EAH stats above SAH ... though that should only take another day ... If I want to make a "bump" to SIMAP I will have to hang about past the 1st and hope for some work ... I have had the joy of getting some LHC work though that sadly is still only on the PCs and soon I will only have the one for a little while more ... I have been slowly cleaning the computer room to the point I almost don't recognize it at all ... A couple more piles of paper and the first pass will be done. Then I need to take apart the whole mess clean/dust the cables, take out the equipment clean the floor, then, bring it all back in and set it up with the cables not being the rats nest they grow into over the years ... Anyway, it has been a surreal experience ... and, not all that pleasant all-in-all, though I am surprised at the number of people that seem to recall me with happy memories. I bet is was something do with slowing down neutrons in nuclear fission. I don't think I can answer that question ... I mean, once I stapled two sheets of paper together and created a document that should be classified SECRET ... a paper clip, unclassified, stapled, SECRET ... All because I had used two words, one on each page ... separate, UNCLAS, together, classified ... I never though I would see insanity like that here ... |

Wow! I can't believe I'm in the presence of Paul D. Buck! I just had to post here..so I'll be able to tell my grandchildren (if I ever have any!) that I was present when you posted and even posted in the same thread as you! I may be sliding down the slippery slope of becoming a degenerate name-dropper, but it can't be helped. I have heard so much about your tremendous achievements and your wonderful personage that I just had to say... It's been an honour, truly!!! Thank you for making your appearance! I will now remove my frivolous presence from the people that count, and retire (safely I hope) to the shallow waters of Cafe Seti, where I belong. :]] |

No one should have to be reminded to follow the rules when posting to these forums. The rules are there to be seen, on the left of your screen, any time you post. |

Qui Gon, Um...Could you please set aside the sword and the shield? We understand your view that you merely enforced the rules and that no-one is above the law. But so many of us are just so delighted that Paul is back!..however briefly. Hopefully we can all put this minor delict behind us quickly as possible...and move on. I beseech you! Bests, Beets |

The forums have become, like many western societies, very republicanized/corporatized. Free expression is allowed within the parameters set by the elites. Anyone venturing outside the boundaries is considered seditious, a malcontent and a trouble maker. I don't like the rules and so I'm changing the way I play the game. |

No one should have to be reminded... Wow! Is that a smack in advance or an advanced smack? Also known as an "onner onnerer" (One To Be Going On For [an assumed] Future). I'll oncemore leap off the forums before being pushed thank you. Thought-crime? Regards, Martin [edit: I've posted to the Mods. Please do likewise (red-x thingie) before this all degenerates into silliness again.) See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

No one should have to be reminded... It depends on what position that 'someone' holds and if they are convinced they can read minds. Account frozen... |

No one should have to be reminded... It also depends on whether or not we've now matured to the point that we can carry on a civil community without the neeed for moderators. Well...have we? Are we getting close? Closer? Are we be willing to Cop our own selves, individually? What do you think? |

if they are convinced they can read minds. I can read 'eyes' and I can read 'hearts'... But reading 'minds' wasn't part of the package... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

It also depends on whether or not we've now matured to the point that we can carry on a civil community without the neeed for moderators. Well...have we? Are we getting close? Closer? if they are convinced they can read minds. i agree with you, but I think you misunderstand what I am saying. If someone is persecuted by people with 'power' for not what they have actually done, but for what they have been accused of, then policing yourself isn't really an issue is it? Thought Crime. Or even having an opinion that others don't like. Who knows? I think I have it figured out...but things I find blindingly obvious, other people don't seem to see. Then they get annoyed with me for pointing it out. :D ..and then because they don't understand they make up all sorts of weird stuff about what I am actually saying so that their world still makes sense. Sometimes I find it extremely frustrating. I think it is a problem with the written word..people can read things how they want with out the guides of facial expression...and of course on an international board their can be cultural and language barriers to understanding. So perhaps a better suggestion that policing yourself would be for people to try to understand what people are writing a little better...see what is written rather than who has written it. Then they get annoyed with me for pointing it out. :D ..and then because they don't understand they make up all sorts of weird stuff about what I am actually saying so that their world still makes sense. Ditto. I think it is a problem with the written word..people can read things how they want with out the guides of facial expression...and of course on an international board their can be cultural and language barriers to understanding. It is so easy to 'say" something that comes across wrongly as read, because of the way it was written. Which is why I always asked if I was in doubt. As in: "Um, are you yelling at me? Because that is sorta the way your post reads ..." BUt, it is easier I guess, still, to just pull the trigger on the flame thrower and assume the worst and go after the person posting. |
