Whenever my comp runs seti it uses %50 of my cpu, thats fine because when I need that power I can turn it off.Boinc redlines my cpu %100 all the time until I shut boinc off. Does anybody know how to set up Boinc to run at that %50 mark? That setting seems to work for me, and more importantly my comp. Then life would be great. Thanks in advance.

LOL... You must have a hyper threading P4. seti-classic was designed to do the same thing - use all the CPU cycles you don't use. But it couldn't handle dual CPUs (which is what a HT CPU acts like). BOINC on the other hand detects dual CPUs and uses both of them. What you are seeing is perfectly normal. Notice, it does not impact your work at all or slow down your computer. It runs at a very low priority so that if ANY other program needs the CPU, BOINC steps back immediately and lets your program run. Watch its CPU usage as you do something that requires a fair amount of your CPU power. I leave it running 24/7 wether I am programming, watching videos, or playing games.

You do have a HT P4

Number of CPUs 2

If it does slow down your work, the Devs who are reading these pages would gladly know about it.

If you feel uncomfortable with this 100 % you have two options.

1.

You can set the numbers of max CPU's to use to 1 in your general preferences (to find on your account webpage here on the server). Then use the update button (to find with right mouseclick on seti@home line in project tab) or wait until BOINC connect the project and ask for new work next time.

At the moment there are two instances of SETI@home running because BOINC count the HT CPU as 2 CPU's. After the preferences where send to your host (the update thing do it) BOINC will use it when it had to decide the next time to start a new WU. It will not stop crunching on currently scheduled work.

2.

You can set the Do work while computer is in use option. Then use the update button (to find with right mouseclick on seti@home line in project tab) or wait until BOINC connect the project and ask for new work next time.

Then BOINC stops working for (default) 3 minutes if it detects a mouse or keyboard action.
