Message 723788 - Posted: 9 Mar 2008, 17:01:44 UTC

After much reading and fumbling around I decided to ask some 'stupid' questions.
1) Which optimized app is the fastest for a given platform?
2) If I have AMD chips running both MMX and SSE, which app do I install?
Thanks in advance!

What CPU Model do You own?

I have tested 2 of Crunch3r's builds for AMD, the MMX and the SSE2 versions.
If Your Processor can do SSE2 this build is much faster than the MMXbuild.
If Your CPU cannot do SSE2, You'll still gain some time using the MMX version instead of the stock Client.

If the cpu supports SSE, then by all means use the SSE app. Use CPUz to verify.

For your X2 box(s), use the SSE2 app. The optimized apps can be found at http://calbe.dw70.de/win32.html

As was mentioned, definately the SSE version in preference to the MMX one

Message 725968 - Posted: 14 Mar 2008, 6:23:24 UTC

So I am looking at running some of Crunch3r's apps. Not sure I am using the correct procedure to install the app_info.xml and files. I just upgraded my boinc install to the latest version: 5.10.45 running under Fedora 8 X64 Then put Crunch3r's package in ~/BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu and started up boincmgr I don't think I am using Crunch3r's packages - anybody know what I might be over looking?
Did I put Crunch3r's package into the right directory?

TIA.

Files are marked with the current version at time of downloading. This means if you downloaded before installing the optimised app, they will be marked with the default app but will use the optimised app.
Files downloaded after installation of optimised app will be marked with the optimised app version number.
If you can run a similar prog to windows task manager, you should see the optimised app running, not the default app.
Sorry don't do Linux, so cannot help further.

Don't know Linux either....but just a silly thought....
You did unzip the Crunch3r download before putting it into the Setiathome folder, right?

In the message log you should see "found appinfo.xml, using anonymous platform" in both Linux and Windows. Though as mentioned the WU's won't immediately reflect this.

*** Watching this thread, with MORE then the usual interesse . ***

Here a link about SSE :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSSE3

The 4 WU's send this morning, crunched with the SSSE3 optimized app. from (Crunch3r), have been sended back and validated

If i'm correct, you said to have put it in the X:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\
projecs\\setiathome\\ , or when running VISTA : X:\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome\\.....

Edit: see you'r running LINUX FEDORA 8. But where to put the opt. app. it's the same.

It runs on any Core 2 Mac, so get it on your iMac.

Hmm, I cant seem to get it working...BOINC is actually the command line version, because I have it running in the background as a service, and installing the optimized client dosent seem to work. I even changed the permissions to make sure the program was runnable...still nothing. Anyone else run into this?

What actually happens: crashes, or just no apparent change from before? What version of BOINC are you running? Did you copy the app_info.xml file, as well as the optimized app itself, into the S@h project folder? Quit and relaunch the BOINC core client? If so, please post the first screenful of messages from when BOINC starts. (If you don’t have BOINC Manager, you can get the log from the stdoutdae.txt file.)

Actually nothing happens...when i restart boinc after installing the files, my activity monitor goes back to 98-99% idle. If i remove the appinfo file and the program, the stock app starts up and takes the idle resources

[edit]checked my boinc.log file (output of boinc) it was giving me the exited with no finished file or whatever...anyways long story short i did chmod -x instead of chmod +x dumb mistake...but hopefully i will see the rac go up now :)
