Message 730982 - Posted: 27 Mar 2008, 13:53:20 UTC - in response to Message 730963.

Hi guys, what are your cpu benchmarks on the 9500?

Reason I ask is because of the following: -

X2 3800
2018 FP Mips
3711 Integer Mips

X2 4200
2246 FP Mips
4142 Integer Mips

X4 9500
912 FP Mips
2854 Integer Mips

I thought that with a newer chip & 4 cores, it would be faster than my 4200?

Not that the benchmarks really mean anything, and they are only used on Seti to calculate amount to download, which is corrected by the DCF.
But there has been suggestions that the benchmark only runs on one cpu but is then divided by number of cpu's.

FP benchmark is done using all cores and the INT is done using Core# 0 only.

What other programs do You have, eating Your power?

A Phenom 9500 produces approx 2240 FPU's at stock speed, so something is not OK with Your setup.

ChrisD, asides from the O/S itself & AVG, I only have Boinc on it. No other programs installed at the moment, which is why I couldn't understand the low benchmark.

Any ideas?

Check taskmanager (or equivalent) and see what's running under the covers. Also, check to see if a power setting is dropping the CPU speed for some reason.

Thanks RandyC. Have checked everything & still cannot see what the problem is. System not O'C'ed. Only 1 program cpu intensive & that's boinc. Have even disabled AVG & it's made no difference.

If BOINC is CPU intensive, then that's your problem. BOINC should show trivial CPU usage (well under 1%). It's the science apps that should be active - 4 @ 25% for a quad. A restart (of BOINC, failing that of the whole computer) may cure it.

Earlier today, I made the same finger-fumble as hiamps' daughter - used the taskbar clock to check a date, and hit 'apply' instead of 'cancel'. Corrected it within seconds, but the damage was done. First effect: BOINC started a benchmark, never finished it (computation suspended for a month, most likely). Second effect: tasks with a deadline less than a month away think they're going to miss deadline, won't task-switch. General chaos. Could you have done anything like that? (have you checked RTC on the motherboard? You'll presumably have been messing with BIOS, with a new CPU).

Looking back through the thread, your only problem is with the benchmarks, right? And you've posted that you're using Win XP 64, but you haven't posted what version of BOINC you're using.

What are your actual, real-world WU crunching times? If they're competitive, then you may have uncovered a bug in the AMD compilation of the benchmarking code of your version of BOINC under Win XP 64 - I see no evidence worthy of a stronger statement than that.

Thank All of you for this topic it has really helped me tremendously as I have a Quad Phenom 9600 on the way should arrive by Tuesday. I have been scouring the net looking here or there to see exactly what else I needed to really take advantage of the chip and this has been probably the BEST location on all around info I have managed to find. I am very curious and anxious to see what chip I will end up with have my fingers crossed it is stepping 3 but one can only hope. The power information is by far the best available I could just use a few suggestions as to EXACTLY which power supply you would reccomend to get the stability needed for the processor. I am working on a very limited budget and this build has already cost me a little more than I had anticipated but still nothing close to its #1 rival. Needless to say I can't wait to get it up and running so I can finally say goodby to my eMachine of DOOM.

@ Richard

I haven't messed with the bios - all I did was update the bios as the orginal on mobo would not cater for the phenoms. All settings on auto - haven't messed around trying to o/c.

Originally d/l latest version of Boinc - 5.10.45. However, I d/l KSWN 2.4v yesterday & it seems to be running ok. All 4 cores still running nicely. I've shown the quad here: - 9500

However, for the past 3 days & at least once/twice per day I've been getting "Machine_Check_Exception". The MS KB states 4 reasons for this & I've checked 3 of them, no problems. The 4th is TLB, so I'm wondering can this be the dreaded "TLB" bug on the cpu? But according to AMD, this only arises if one is using Virtualisation &/or 2 o/s - I'm using neither.

Since using the chicken app, I've completed 2 wu's - 1 result with credit granted & 1 pending.

Edit - Rebooted

Well, in my book 'updating' equates to 'messing about with' - all I meant was that you needed to check that the clock was accurate after you'd finished doing whatever you were doing with it.

I don't think I'd call almost an hour and a half for a shorty, using an optimised app, "running". More a gentle stroll - my P4 Northwoods can almost keep up with that.

What does CPU-Z or similar say about the real speed the processor is running at?

If it's a 9600 it can only be stepping B2. The B3 steppings are numbered as 9x50, so a 2.3GHz version would be 9600 as B2, and 9650 as B3.

I always have had great results with Thermaltake PSU's. I had one go bad after almost a year of continious running. It was still under manfacture warranty and Newegg replaced it no problems what so ever.I like the modular type that you can add/remove the cables as needed. Your power supply needs may be calculated using this site, http://support.asus.com/PowerSupplyCalculator/PowerSupplyCalculator_right.aspx? or google power supply calculator for others. Just make sure the PSU has the connections you need /salute

Sorry, RTC threw me for a moment. Clock ok. Could it be down to either ram or mobo?
I've put a cpuz validated image below.

Your multiplier is way off it should be at 11. It looks like your only using half the speed of the CPU.

It does. Asus has done a bios upgrade to enable it to recognise the 9500/9600's. Bios is 1703 - They have recently upgraded the bios further with 1802 (this was released on 18/3/08, but bios date shows 1/4/08).

Thanks Seaking57. As I'm using a kvm, will try adjusting now.

Didn't have to do anything. Currently showing: - 201.01 x 11.0= 2211.16
