Hi all, not trying hi-jack thread, but :)

I have a phenom 9600 running vista 64, and I m using boinc client 5.10.45.
I can`t get boinc to use all 4 cores or a task per core, it only runs two tasks and uses about 60% of CPU. I ve tryed setting affinity which does not work.

Should I use a different client or is there any reg fix for my current version?
I would be great to get all 4 cores crunching.:))

When you start BOINC, in the messages do you get:

14/03/2008 03:40:30||Reading preferences override file

Then in your BOINC folder there will be a global_prefs_override.xml file, you can either;

Delete or rename the file after closing BOINC. Then re-start BOINC.

Or in the manager go the Advanced/Preferences/Processor Usage and near the bottom there is an entry for number of cpu's.

If this is not the case check "location" of computer Home/school/work and ensure the correct location is correct, and that you clicked Update and the updated Seti in your manager.

HTH,
Andy

I swapped the CPU's a week back and they showed zero errors. Until last night. I attached both of them to LHC and Cosmology. At the same time I switched the vanilla app machine with the previously dodgy CPU over to the enhanced app and the error returned. Is there any way to specifically stress the SSE instruction set to see if this is the cause on this particular CPU?

Well I finally got fed up with my Phenom and called AMD to do an RMA. I'm almost certain mine has a bad memory controller. Prime95 runs ok if I use the "Small FFTs" option. The cores even heat up a good 8 degrees more than when they run seti. But when I use the slightly larger "In-place FFTs" which start to hit the memory, the box reboots within 2 minutes, just like it does with seti. This would seem to indicate that the cores themselves are ok but as soon as I start stressing the memory controller it wiggs out.

Anyway, I do have to give AMD an "Excellent" rating on their customer service! I had to navigate a menu system but once I said "connect me to a human" I was talking to "John" within 5 seconds. About 7 minutes later I had an RMA number and an email with the address to send the CPU to. He will test it on their test bench and If it fails, they will 2 day air me a new one.

And if it does not fail?

What are the chances your sample is just a little slow? Did you ever try these same things at a lower clock rate?

Also beware the motherboards that can't supply the core supply current required and cause one of the cores to appear to fail when stressed... There's quite a flurry of web comments about the third core failing in that way.

Good luck,
Martin

Yes, underclockig the memory controller to 1.4 yielded relative stability. It still rebooted once a week or so. Of course every time it did I was in the middle of a game with some friends. :( But since the memory controller is on the die that still means a bad CPU. Underclocking the actual cores had no impact.

Also beware the motherboards that can't supply the core supply current required and cause one of the cores to appear to fail when stressed... There's quite a flurry of web comments about the third core failing in that way.

I have seen some of this... I thought it was mostly a problem with slightly older AM2 motherboards - am I mistaken? I have a brand new AM2+. Also if this was a problem with the 3rd core, I would expect prime95 to cause problems in the "Small FFT" mode where the cores all heat up to higher than normal temps which of course means that they are drawing more power than usual.

Guess we'll see what they find. I just dropped it off at a FedEx location over lunch. Should be in California by Friday.

A few weeks ago I replaced an AMD 6400 black that crapped out with a 9600 Phenom, B2 stepping, on an AM2 (not AM2+) Asus Crosshair MB a few weeks ago. A simple BIOS update to allow this Phenom to be used on the MB that had already been done weeks before since I had planned to go to the Phenom when the B3 stepping processors came out, and it has been flawless. Not a single BSoD or problem WU, except the 13fe08's everyone has had. I have to agree with Toby on AMD's customer service, I called AMD about the 6400 and it was very fast and "human"... a good conversation, received a RMA #, sent it in, and awaiting the results. I am sure however the 6400 processor is bad, the Phenom worked immediately, I never even removed AMD's dual core optimizer program. The rig is running about a 2k RAC not over clocked, I think it may be topping out, I am not sure since it has been at most only 2 weeks since it was installed. My Q6600's and 6700 indeed run much higher RAC's at 3k+, one of the Q6600's is new and still working up to a stable RAC, at least so far. No complaints so far on the 9600 Phenom or AMD. My personal read on the AMD Phenom problem is a lot of the problems are most likely MB/BIOS/power related. This is my take and experience on the AMD Phenom. /salute

They are very sensitive to power problems. I have seen several lock ups caused by glitches on the mains power and even third core lock outs caused by the same. I have just ordered an on-line UPS to try and eliminate lock ups caused by dirty mains. None of my other computers are as bad as the phenoms for this.

The new B3 steppings are out today, including a 9850 black edition.

Hi guys, what are your cpu benchmarks on the 9500?

Reason I ask is because of the following: -

X2 3800
2018 FP Mips
3711 Integer Mips

X2 4200
2246 FP Mips
4142 Integer Mips

X4 9500
912 FP Mips
2854 Integer Mips

I thought that with a newer chip & 4 cores, it would be faster than my 4200?

Was the 9500 Linux or Windows?

I just found my Black Edition 5000+ running about half-speed because "Cool N Quiet" was on and I didn't notice when I switched OS to Linux. I don't think the "Cool N Quiet" affected the Windows OS nearly as much.

You might just check BIOS to make sure it is off.

I wonder if one core isn't running. I've seen lots about this on the Internet. Good luck.....I'm shopping for a couple of Black 9600s.
