I'm wondering what version of SETI would work best with the Phenom.

Hi Snake.

I am lookin forward to see Your Phenom get to work. :)

(It's still not on Your Host list).

I am using the file: KWSN_2.4_SSE2-AMD_MB.exe file from lunatics.at, but their site is regrettably down at the moment.

PM me if You want me to e-mail You a copy.

How does that one work?
Please feel free to examine my hosts, and You will have something to decide upon. :)

Good Luck

ChrisD

No it's not... it's up and running over at lunatics.kwsn.net

Would be a bad idea... since all 2.4 apps for win/lin whatsoever are the ones that i've build too. 2.4(V/L/U) are the latest releases....

Though i'd be willing to compile a new 2.41 STL one for those that are willing to test it...

Here is my phenom thats been running with the KWSN client for a while now. Every time I get within striking distance of 2,000 RAC either the servers take a short break or something else happens and my plans for world domination are foiled... maybe this time!

Unfortunately I can't give a glowing review of the Phenom... I've had a lot of trouble with mine. If I run the memory controller at full speed it spontaneously reboots after under a minute of seti. The only way I can run it stable is to drop the memory controller frequency to 1.4 GHz. Even then, the chipset has some problems too...

Thanks for the new link :) I have been searching far and wide for the old link, but it seemed not wide enough :)

This new 2.41 STL, what improvements have You implemented? I may be interested in giving it a try, if You want me to.

Toby: What MainBoard are You using. These new ATI Chipsets are not very well suited for Phenom, it seems. I am just now initializing the 3rd Phenom Host. I use ASUS A2N32SLI DeLuxe mainboards. Bios needs to be updated, not to the newest 2008 versions but to Ver 1503 from November 2007. This BIOS contains a bug that locks the HT to 200 MHz. (This has of course been fixed, but they have also 'repaired' the 'bug' slowing the Phenom down. Both my Phenoms have been running for 2½ months 24/7 and I have never seen this 'bug'. The 200 MHz HT link has no impact on SETI crunching, but most Phenoms will run stable at at least 2.4 GHz using these mainboards.

Try reducing the HT to 1000 MHz and see if it stabilizes Your machine.

To avoid non-responding servers, set Your workcache to 10 days. This will feed You approx 500 WU's, so SETI needs to be down a whole week before I run out of work.

Best of luck to You.

@ ChrisD & Toby.

Just finished building 9500 Phenom with XP64. What's the rac like for them?

Been helping team out on competitions & POTM - Currently running the "Bunny Race" @WCG. When finished, all my personal rigs will be coming back to S@H.

My Phenom 9500 is running a RAC of >2600 right now on an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI board.

Depending on the mix of Angle Ranges in the assigned WU's my hosts turn out between 2300 and 2600 credits per day running SETI 24/7.

Mainboards used are all ASUS A2N32SLI Deluxe, which is a standard AM2 board, no DDR2 1066 or DDR3.

In the 'old' days running single core Athlon64's (Barton Cores with 512 Kb level 2 cache), Fast RAM had a significantly influense on crunching times.

(Getting DDR RAM with timings 2-2-2-5 really made a big improvement compared to the mainstream 3-3-3-6 RAM shortening the processing times almost to scale.)

The Phenom Processor seems to be much less dependant on fast RAM when it comes to crunching SETI Work.

Altering RAM timings from 5-5-5-15 to 4-4-4-12 does not shorten the time the Phenum uses to process a given WU.

However, if You buy prime Corsair or OCZ DDR2 800 RAM that can do 4-4-4-12, You will almost certain, be able to run a stock Phenum 9500 at a FSB of 220 MHz giving You a Core Speed of 2400 MHz. No Core voltage increase is needed and You can kepp Yor DIMM Voltage at 1.8 Volts as well.
This setting is ROCK Stable. My 2 Phenum Hosts are crunching SETI 24/7 and if You take a look at the SETI Stats page You will only notice one dip in performance which was due to a major power outage that lasted more or less a whole day.

Great, thanks ChrisD. Much appreciated. Can't wait to get it on S@H.

I upgraded the machine to the Phenom using an Asus M3N mom board, merged the machines, and it's been running since friday I think.
I've been running it at 100% with no problems. I'm unable to determine my correct RAC at this time because of the problems the seti site is having applying credit. Everthing from all my machines is going into "pending".
Next step is to figure out how to overclock it a tad without using the upgraded bios that "fixes" the phemon issues by crippling it and slowing down the whole thing.
I'll let you know.

Strange, to say at least.

I now have 3 Phenom 9500's running 2420 MHz, 2420 MHz and 2607 MHz crunching SETI on all 4 cores without one single hickup.

Maybe this dude should do his homework a little more before making such a bastant announcement.

Maybe he should go and get himself a better mainboard. All the complaint seems to come from AM2+ board owners, GigaByte for instance. Maybe the chipset is the culprit.

I am seriously disappointed that Tom's are jumping that bandwagon without properly checking what is really wrong.

Thanks ChrisD, I've just learnt a new word ... lol.
A Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language defines bastant as "possessed of ability" here

Even typos can be fun.
