I don't have my new system specified down to the last component but I have decided on an Asus P5K Deluxe motherboard and I know that I'm going to build around a Q6600 so I was going to start getting parts on order. I don't want to do everything at once so as to spread out the costs. I probably can't get it all from one source anyway.

I see a lot of reviews both good and bad about many of the online sellers but I don't know anything about those doing the reviewing.

I would really appreciate it if some would share your good and not so good experiences about places with whom you've done business. I'd like to avoid some of the headaches I've read about if possible.

Thanks!

I have had nothing but the best from www.newegg.com and also www.tigerdirect.com

Those are really the only two places I have experience with, but my last system was built entirely from Newegg and not 1 problem.

Just put together a new rig and ordered all components through Newegg. Quick delivery, never had a problem with them.

I have used Newegg.com for several year/builds. Great prices, great service, always ship on time and great RMA policy.

I used to be a cruncher like you, then I took an arrow to the knee.

I have not had a single issue with the service provided by Newegg. The only item I received that was bad was my original hard drive for the system build back in December of 2004. I was able to get SeaTools (Seagate Diagnostics) to run on the drive and it showed that the drive was bad. Newegg issued an RMA for it immediately. Many complained when the switch was made from FedEx to UPS for regular service, but I didn't have a problem with that either. It might help when you live in a UPS hub city though... ;-)

Another vote for NewEgg. But I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket (pun intended). I also shop www.ZipZoomFly.com (formerly GoogleGear.com before Google sued), and a couple other smaller companies that sometimes have great deals on specific hardware such as RAM or CPUs.

Gotten a lot of stuff from Newegg, always good service, had to return one motherboard, no problems with that, opted for a credit and got a different brand as a replacement. I've also gotten things from ClubIT, and Heatsink Factory. Both of them are fine, too, though not as good for me on shipping times. One thing I liked ClubIT over Newegg for was that I could get a Q6600 specifically in G0 stepping, I never saw a way to specify that at Newegg.

Thanks everyone for the comments so far on Newegg, Tiger Direct and others. Keep them coming.

I was concerned about Newegg because I was reading a lot of very negative comments about multiple aspects of their service. Those were however all unknown reviews and now I know I'm hearing from people that have clearly done quite a bit of business with them and have purchased many of the same things that I'm going to be buying.

Dave, that is good to know about ClubIT. I know that probably most of the B3 stepping processors are gone but I was also concerned about taking luck of the draw. I saw a couple of places that the description still said B3 stepping.

Directron has some specialty gear at great prices, picked up Thermalright 120 Ultra Extreme there the other day. I've been buying from them for years, plus it helps that they are in the neighborhood.

Generally though, prices are better at NewEgg and I've found NewEggs online chat with customer service representative very handy for instantly resolving any billing issues that may arise. Delivery is always fast with their 3-business days UPS service and shipping is often free:-) Be sure to subscribe to their newsletter for promo pricing on a wide variety of items weekly.

I've also picked up some items at Frys.com. Sometimes I think that they misprice items by applying rebate deductions directly to their merchandise and then still offer & grant the rebate. Got a couple of video cards from them in the past 3 weeks, free after mail-in rebate. Granted, it's not the latest hi-performance video cards, but the GeForce 6200 more than meets my needs. it has a heatsink and not a fan, and is a power miser, so is both quiet and is cheap to operate. They also had the Antec P180 case for $70 after $30 MIR, though that was too expensive to ship, so I picked that up at the local Frys store, same price. That giant Thermalright HS from Directron fits perfect on a NewEgg Q6600 in the Antec case from Frys.

Maybe I got carried away with details, but the point is that it pays to shop around and high performance computing need not be too expensive. Sometimes the best prices can be found in your own backyard.

Good luck,
John

P.S. I'm still keeping my eye on you in my rearview mirror, Bob in Fl

My only grumble with NewEgg: in California, because they're in-state, one pays California sales tax, which is fine because you save on shipping, and ground at least should be overnight.

... unless they ship from New Jersey, then you pay sales tax and wait a week for the ground package.

Another vote for Newegg. Good selection, good price, quick shipment. Only had to RMA one item (a motherboard) and it was a simple and quick procedure with no hassles..p

I had a problem with one component from NewEgg, and NewEgg was happy to take it back and supply me with a different brand. The problem was the manufacturers as the manufacturer claimed to have drivers for the OS I was using, but really did not. You never know how service is going to be until something goes wrong. In this case NewEgg did the right thing.

They do have more restrictions on returning CPUs than on anything else - be careful about that.

Newegg always works for me. Good prices and good return service, very importaint when you need it. One note, if you are still looking for a P5k, I just bought one off ebay about 2 weeks ago for $28 plus $10 for shipping. Looked and there are several listed right now. You never know who your are really buying from but the one I received was brand new in an unopened box. You might try there first.

MicroCenter is blowing out the Q6600 right now for $199. FYI: In-store only. Just picked me up another one ;-)

Great price, but the closest store is about 250 miles away. Gas would cost too much.

Great! I live just about a half hours drive away from a Microcenter.

You might want to call ahead. The store in Houston ran out after 2 hours Friday past. I walked in this morning when they opened at 10:00AM and they had one on the shelf, SLACR in a retail box. 30 day exchange only, no refund policy on CPU's.

Good luck,
John
