I can't see microsoft going anywhere anytime soon. Almost every business in the world uses microsoft software of some kind, not to mention all of the private residents that use their software. With the amount of demand that microsoft is experiencing going up I think they will be around for a good long time.

Never. I am 15 and, short of the apocalypse, I do not think Microsoft will close in my grandchildrens lifetime. No matter how many people gripe about the software, they still control 90-95%(?) of the market.

I completely agree.

I don't think Microsoft will close down in the next 50 years or so...But their importance may diminish...and they find themselves a subsidiary of some as of yet unknown super-corporation.

Very good point, and that corporation may one day be Linux.

Highly unlikely, but I shall remain hopeful.

You have certainly been on a great roll lately (from a humour POV), Scarecrow!

Keep it up, I've been having a real bad week so far. :-)

Microsoft has too much of a stranglehold on the OS market (at least among layman home-computer users) to go anywhere. Their applications division has been slowing somewhat, due to competition from the likes of, say, Open Office (which I use), but that has only seen them shift over to games. Unless something seriously dramatic happens, they'll stay where they are in the OS market.

That said, I hope at some point they put out a more pared-down version of Windows. Less code should be the objective, not more. If I were in charge for a day, there'd be a version of Vista that was stripped of every advanced feature and application except for a GUI, networking, drivers, and a web browser (only because you really need one in this day and age) and let users choose which other software to install for which purpose, whether it was from Microsoft or not.

It's hard to think of them NOT existing.

Maybe. But maybe they'll change and become a company like OCP (Omni Consumer Products).

They're gonna have to make Linux more user-friendly if they expect Microsoft to meet its demise. I tried Mandrake (now Mandriva) several years ago but it wouldn't handle a 100-page document or the printer satisfactorily. One had to join a club (just as expensive as Microsoft products) to have any hope of getting any technical info with Mandrake. One the other hand I hate the complexity of Microsoft products, too. I just accidentally hit the wrong button five minutes ago and erased part of this message trying to get out of that mess. Some darn flag came down and I pressed the "x" which got me back to the desktop while I was writing this. If I want to change something I have to search for it and it's difficult to impossible to find anything in the darn index. Type in a word and that's no help, either.
