OK, guys i just downloaded BOINC and have attached Seti@home. this may amuse some of you, but I have NO idea what to do or how i am to "complete" a task or even to find out what the actual task consists of. can someone give me a hand?

There's really nothing more for you to do. BOINC will automatically take care of the rest for you.

Once you've attached to a project (SETI@Home), it downloads all the required files to begin processing workunits, and downloads the workunits. BOINC then controls all management of the science app based upon your preferences and uploads finished results when necessary.

There's nothing else to it.

Welcome to Boinc and the Seti project.

There is nothing to do but to let Boinc do its thing. It handles the up/downloads and reporting of the work done. Its all pretty much hands off unless a problem develops. The Boinc software was design to be as automated as possible. In theory it is set and forget. If you look at the Advanced view - Task tab you should see the WU (work unit) you are working on.

If you set your preferences to Run always then you can see the numbers ticking away. You can highlight the WU in progress and click the graphic button to see a graphic representation to the data being analyzed. That's all there is to it. Not very exciting. Just a lot of number crunching.

As you complete the work you will begin to receive credits proportional to the work accomplished. There can be a delay in the actual granting of credits since all results are compared against a wingman for accuracy. Before you ask, the credits have no intrinsic value, they are just a gauge of the amount of work done.

The 'action' is in the discussions forums. You will be allowed to post in the main forums once you start to receive credits. In the mean time you may want to look over the forums other then Q&A (help) forums to get a feel for the community of volunteers.

Pretty much. If you like, you can check your credits from time to time to see how you're doing.

Before you ask, credits aren't worth anything. They are simply a measurement of how much you've contributed to the project and nothing more.
