Hello, some years ago I found that thing in the visual executer of SETI@home. Look at that:

It's very strange, isn't it?

Although it is beautiful and interesting as to how it happened, I don't believe it is strange. What we are seeing is -actually- LACK of background noise. I believe that something went wrong in the way, from the detection antennae / hardware to the recorders. SETI is searching for signals that are expected to be STRONGER than the background noise and not gaps in background noise, that SHOULD be there in the first place.

Posting in the Wish list forum, I guess you WISH you'd found something... ;)

ok, they are searching for a signal... but what if we search for silence?

I'll give you an example:

You are in the middle of a chaotic traffic down in a big city like New York. I'm 200 meters far from you and i must communicate with you. I try to scream, but you won't hear nothing because there are: engine cars, clacsons, people round to you that talk, music from a street musician... and so on. What if I make you listen to nothing? Imagine I can "shout silence" to you...

I remember "Q" from Star Trek TNG that said to Picard that we (human race) have to look out to some new and strange ways of thinking the universe... maybe that signal, that silence, is what are we looking for...

I hope! :)

While anything is in the realm of possible, we have to limit our search to the probable due to lack of power and time. If we started searching all the "silence" too, we'd never get through all of our work...

...not to mention that it's too far fetched. Silence is a lack of a signal, or a lack of anything. Even if E.T. used mental telepathy, there would still be some trace of this "broadcasted thought" that would have to be identified, verified and brought down to a science. The statistical probability that all communication is happening in silence is very minute indeed.
