BBC News website just put out this story, noting that the first use of a new SETI technique known as Very Long Baseline Interferometry has turned up no signal from Gliese 581; it mentions a comment from Seth SHostak from the SETI Institute, although no mention of SETI@home as such. Here is the link, if I can code it in here:

The radiotelescope in the picture is likely the Parkes antenna in Australia. Einetein@home is getting data from it and its volunteers have found so far 21 new pulsars in it, plus those found in data from Arecibo (18).

As always, there is no mention of SETI@home. We simply do not exist, even if we should soon get Kepler data from Green Bank.

Alpha Centauri was the first place the private Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence program looked in its decade-long hunt for radio signals that signify alien intelligent life. Nothing was found, but that doesn't mean nothing is there, said SETI Institute astronomer Seth Shostak.

'I think we’ll find E.T. within two dozen years using these sorts of experiments.'

- SETI’s Seth Shostak

Intelligent extraterrestrial beings are out there, and we’ll be meeting them shortly – perhaps within the next 25 years, according to one scientist.

The SETI project scientists are known for tracking possible extraterrestrial signals, but now they are also considering sending messages from Earth telling of our position. A researcher questions this idea in view of the results from a survey taken by students, revealing the general level of ignorance about the cosmos and the influence of religion when tackling these matters.

Are we ready for contact with extraterrestrial intelligence?

Astronomers Tell Congress TheyÂ’re Almost Certain ET Exists

(WASHINGTON) -- Two top astronomers told Congress on Wednesday that it would be “bizarre if we are alone,” and asked for continued funding to detect extraterrestrial life.

Dan Werthimer, director of the SETI Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley (SETI is short of “Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence”), also told the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology that he thinks the possibility of microbial life on other planets is close to 100 percent.

I hope they don't put SETI in the UFO category.

Money is so tight they will be lucky to get any. Finding ET is not a pressing issue. Especially with congress trying to find some way to restore the 10% sequestered cut in defense spending.

Have aliens already visited Earth? Nasa book suggests that ancient rock art could have been created by extraterrestrials

A new book details the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Seti)
In it the authors discuss the methods through which we might find aliens
These include searching for signs of life on planets or finding messages
The book details some of the challenges ahead for making first contact
But ultimately the authors say it is something that might happen one day

Nice Read.

I found that NASA would suggest that aliens did rock carving disturbing but if it is on the Internet it must be true.

The book referenced is available online free courtesy of US taxpayers.

I call your attention to page 241
We can say little, if anything, about what these patterns signify, why they were cut into rocks, or who
created them. For all intents and purposes, they might have been made by aliens.*
*One need only think of books by Immanuel Velikovsky or Erich von Däniken to see where that
line of thinking can end up.
Perhaps the British press, Mail online, should learn to read. Maybe the English language threw them off.

We could find alien life but politicians don't want to, claims scientist

This is according to Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at Seti Institute
Data suggests our galaxy has 40 billion planets with potential for life
But finding these depends on sophisticated and expensive experiments
'Sadly much of this reconnaissance hardware is still on the drawing boards, not in space,' said Dr Shostak.

Well. Yes. The truth is hard for many politicians for many reasons. Since exactly when has the absolute truth produced your next paycheck?
Yep, there is a lot that the politicians don’t wanna do. We get the government we deserve.
With people like Seth Shostak on our side, we thankfully deserve even more!

Data suggests our galaxy has 40 billion planets with potential for life

Some unsophisticated folks would think that this well known figure is implying that there are that many Earth Like planets with that many civilizations just sitting out there in our galaxy.

It is irresponsible statements such as this that cast a poor light on our endeavors in listening and looking. To my knowledge not one other Earth-like planet as yet has been found that has all of the dozen or more necessary conditions for life. Therefore such a statement as this is wildly speculative and premature. If there are any such planets with an advanced civilization such as ours they are most likely too far away for us to ever detect. A professional in the field of astronomy should know this far better than I. So I say this with the same certainty of the putative 40 billion number. Since we are UNCERTAIN to a high degree at the moment we keep searching and listening for a possibly rare event to occur--we have been doing so for 50 years now.

Those in Academia don't need to be polishing unsavory items such as this.
