Tired of waiting 4 monthes for a pending w/u?
We've all had them. Here's one I found.
600+ w/u's in progress, last one and only one completed in october!
I predict all those will have to be sent out again.

My oldest was reported back on Oct 27th 2007. I've got +/- 4500 tasks in the queue for my 150 PC's (254 cores), although I know right now, I've got 46K+ pending credit waiting to be awarded. Gotta take the good with the bad, no?

Happy Crunching!

@Arych--I don't think he was asking who among us has the oldest pending WUs. He was aksing which of our wingmen have the largest batch of pendings themselves.

I have one WU, issued on January 2nd, for which the wingmen has another 1,827 WUs. That machine has not contacted Berkeley since then.

Most of my big hoarders have timed out already but I have one issued on the 12th of January. I finished on the 15th. My wingman drew one WU on the 12th and hasn't been heard from since. The WU doesn't time out until the 5th of March. At least I'm the only one that has to wait on him. :)

Before we condemn people for being evil, we should ask ourselves "how do we know this was done on purpose" or maybe more important "do we know that this was done with malice."

It happens, and it'll work itself out.

In most cases, I doubt it's hoarding of workunits. Most people keep their queues down to less than a week. I'm guessing most of these are just lost workunits.

There are many ways for workunits to get lost, unfortunately. If a user needs to reset the project in order to clear up an error conditions, the results can get lost. Some get lost if our server is overloaded and the computer requesting work never gets informed of which workunits to download. And, of course, some fraction of people just stop running BOINC after a while.

Unfortunately this problem has gotten worse since we turned off the "resend lost results" feature because it was wrecking our database performance. With that feature on, if a user did a "reset project" they would get the same workunits that they already had on that machine. If they missed the message telling them which workunits to do they would get it next time they contacted the server.

I'll look at the stats on returned results to see if we can decrease the timeouts. Other than that, there's not much that can be done unless we find some way to send lost results that doesn't load down the database.

I'm waiting on credit for a result I returned on 25 November. Overall there should be few enough of these that your RAC won't be affected significantly.

Thank you Eric for your response. It's cool you have addressed this in the past.
My only concern was that the science doesn't fall behind. Would it? On some of the staggering amounts of w/u's some computers I've seen that could never complete in time. For me, I know that one day in the future, the other half will get done. And the pending credit I do have you can keep! As to anyone else who reads this thread, QSilver was right about the !point! of my post. IT'S NOT ABOUT PENDING CREDIT. I will be more specific next time.

I don't see how the science would fall behind. As long as the WU is resent eventually, the work is still done.

Re: credit, if the number of lost/delayed WU remains relatively constant (which, if it follows a standard distribution, it probably would) then RAC wouldn't really be affected, because although a 'wingman' might have just 'lost' a unit, you probably just got credit for one that was several months old. Roll and repeat.

This shows too that the science is being done (credit granted=completion and entry into database, of course).

Again, off track.
This thread is to find the computer with the most pending w/u's not credit and has no hope of finishing. (lost contact with your wingman) The correct response to this thread is a computer number or workunit.
I already know about how BOINC works, duh!!!

"Treasure hunt" or "Witch hunt"?

Your original post sounds like you want to do something once you've found the offending individuals.

But I guess no one can have any fun around here.

Stefan Ver3,

I understand the problems very well. I had one in which the (wingman) had over 800 units to complete and he/she only had one machine working (a small machine). With only about 22,000 pending I don't want to over work the SETI machines more than I have to looking for it. I have tried in the past to notify the wingman (very nicely) but that didn't work. I also realize that there are many heavy hitters who have way over 50,000 units pending.

But all in all, I'm still trying to having some fun.

To what purpose? BOINC takes care of this in the long run. Unless you're going to politely PM the 'offending' individuals with a query, which may or may not end up being useful.

Good evening.

Your message subject (and your early posts) sound like a soapbox thread.

... and a "call to action" against those evil crunchers who are stealing all your work units.

This is why people are questioning your motivation, especially since the work is not lost, just delayed.

It seems over and over again I'm having to repeat myself. To the same two people. The other hundreds don't seem to mind. If you have a problem with the thread contact a moderator, and it will be deleted!
Further, policing threads should not to be your personal duty or agenda, you do not own this forum! You are free to post whatever you please, but addressing future comments directed at me will be considered an attack, on my right to post. And will be forwarded to the proper adminisration of this forum. You have been given fair warning.
I know you are all good people, and maybe this thread really doesn't serve a purpose for you. At the same time, the other 99% who actually understand what this thread is about don't share the same sediment you do.
I might not have the google of posts on this site like everyone else does, as I am very new to this forum. Perhaps I should stay in my other forums, as I have been so well recieved here. But relax! For the LAST TIME. I'm not out to get anyone!
