Credits are a way for the project to pay you back for the work your computer is doing.
They cannot be used for anything (as of yet), other than to brag with and showing off how good your computer is.

Hi all.

This is my first post so excuse me if I am not versed on all aspects of the unwritten rules and regs, but I believe the rules I have seen are self explanatory and are simple courtesy.

With regards to the theme of this thread I do have a few suggestions. Currently the 'credit' system allows users to rank themselves against others which is good. How about we gain an equal number of 'green credits'. We can turn these 'credits' into 'prizes'... I don't mean things like t-shirts or baseball caps, but with astronomical pictures, pictures of the Arecibo dish etc. These could be high resolution pictures we can download from a site. We can 'purchase' them with credits that we earn for a chunk of data. Obviously, the better quality or more interesting cost more credits than others. We can get more 'green credits' by doing more data files or by donating to the Search.

I say pictures because they would be easy for the Institute to obtain these pictures by themselves or outsource images. Also, people could donate pictures of their team stargazing and others can spend credits to download these images. The possibilities are endless and offers something for the members and may attract new members. If the University wants to give away t-shirts or baseball caps for 1000 credits a time, that is also a good idea... What do you think?

The only problem with using credits to "redeem" for anything, be it baseball caps, t-shirts or pictures you download, it turns the credit system into a form a "payment" which would immediately validate claims such as "you're holding back payment of mine for a WU that hasn't been validated since November!" It would create more greed for the credit system, which it certainly doesn't need any more greed.

Instead, I would rather see credit milestones, such as when you hit 100,000 you can download a picture or 1,000,000 credits can get you a higher res image. This idea is exactly similar with the current certificates idea where you can print out a certificate showing your accumulated credits, but lets you do certain things at certain milestones.

The credits are a measurement tool. They can not be "taken" out of the loop. It also allows the researchers to use for publicity (if so desired).

To use credits to buy things (even pictures), is giving them a value. Right now they are more or less null and void in value. This allows the ones that are to stay as a non-profit entity.

Greetings to All,

Question about "pending credit"; What exactly is it "pending" on? Is getting the credits dependent on the completion of a segment of the work assigned to another user? Can "pending credit" be lost, never assigned?

Hi Johnny C,

We get this question all the time. Instead of typing it out again, I'll just point you here.
