There are 3 general preference settings for disk space. Make sure all of them are set appropriately.

I'm getting the same problem as the first poster in this thread. I have my preferences set to use no more than 6GB, use no less than 2GB, use 75% of the available space.

and when I try to run BOINC I get this:

2004-07-11 16:03:28 [SETI@home] Requesting 79844 seconds of work
2004-07-11 16:04:54 [SETI@home] Sending request to scheduler: http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
2004-07-11 16:04:55 [SETI@home] Scheduler RPC to http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi succeeded
2004-07-11 16:04:55 [SETI@home] Message from server: No work available (there was work but you don't have enough disk space allocated)

So what are the appropriate settings? Where are the "appropriate" setting documented?

Any help is appreciated.

Note that the % setting is not a percentage of "available" space, but a percentage of "total" space.

If you set it at 75% and more than 75% of your total disk space is used with other stuff, boinc won't have any available for it.

If you have 100 GB total space and have 20 GB available, any setting less than 80% will effectively leave 0 space for boinc, regardless of the other settings you give. It has to be able to "pass the test" for the criteria that you give it in ALL THREE fields. If it fails any one of them, it reports not enough space.

Darren,

Thanks for the helpful response.

My drive capacity is 74.52 GB, I have 26.16 GB available, 48.35 GB in use.

I set the BOINC limits to Use no more than 6GB, leave at least 2GB free, Use no more than 8% or the total space. I figure 8% of 74.52GB is 5.9616GB which tells BOINC to stay within the 6GB limit.

Am I still missing something? I still get this info from Boinc:

Message 6766 - Posted: 12 Jul 2004, 3:17:50 UTC - in response to Message 6721.

I've increased the "Use no more than" seeing to 10GB, "Leave at least" is at 2GB, "Use no more than" set to 8% of total. My total capacity is 75.52GB.

I still get the "you don't have enough disk space alloated".

I sure wish the log told me how much disk space is needed to make SETI happy enough to download some work. It is getting really old experimenting around and having to wait an hour each time due to "deferred communication".

Any one have any ideas? How do you shorten the "deferred communications" time? How do you figure out how much space SETI wants to give you the privilege to crunch their data?

Predictor, S@H and BOINC with WUs and results combined use less than 100 MB on my machine. I have a queue lenght of .1 to .2 days (one or two WUs depending on the machine). Some other projects threaten to use as much as 600MB for a single WU.

If 48.35 is already being used out of 74.52 total, then roughly 66% of your hard drive is already in use. Boinc looks at your total hard drive and if more than the number you specify is in use (by anything, not just by boinc) it doesn't find any room it can use. Bump the % up to a very high number - 95 or so - then your other data won't come into play. Boinc won't take over and throw everything else out, because it will still be limited by the "use no more than 8" and the "leave at least 2 free" settings.
