i have just installed mandrake 10 very first time useing the thing all i can say is i'm a noob never used it before and i'm lost how do i install this this what programs i use.

i have the file in my /home/user/downloads/bonic
folder i have two files the download one and the extracted file where do i go now and what do i do
all i'm used to is exes were they go lol
i read chmod +x what does that mean any help would be nice never used any thing other that windows (me want a change)

mv the extracted file to a shorter name (such as boinc)
chmod 755 boinc
./boinc
follow the instructions if you already registered
otherwise register first

To answer your question, you have to set a bit in the protection mask of a file to make the file executable, otherwise you can't run it. This is one of the little things that makes it a bit harder to write worms, viruses and spyware for Linux (just a bit, and that's not meant as a pun).

tullio's "chmod 755" sets that bit (among other bits). There's a nice little intro to chmod and a few other Linux commands here:
