Turns out I was misinformed: while Arecibo Observatory is currently being recommissioned, the ALFA receiver still isn't attached yet and won't be after some more cleanup. In short, the ETA is still TBD. So be it.

Currently (at least as I am writing this) we are in the midst of another "crunch" period where workunits are returning much faster than normal, thereby swamping our servers. This time Jeff and I looked at the results. The bunch we observed weren't "noisy" - they were normal workunits that just happened to finish quick due to their slew rates. This isn't a scientific/project problem - it's simply just extra load on our servers (a.k.a. a free "stress test").

We're getting prepared for another donation drive. I just updated the hardware donation page, for example.

I've noticed the web pages are rather slow and have been recently. Assuming the short wu's are the reason, why does this happen since the web server and the u/d servers are on different hardware servers.

Regarding the near time persistency compute server on your xmas list, why does it have to be such a major platform? I don't recall what needs to be done. Is there a current link on this program?

The slowness on the web servers is almost always due to BOINC database overload. This mysql database is shared by the web servers and the BOINC scheduler/backend so, yes, one could mess up the other by clobbering the mysql server (since it will slow down all queries - separate servers have nothing to do with it).

This machine will be continually analyzing and randomly scanning a database about 1TB in size, which will require some computing heft to say the least. Jeff is working on this program - a writeup of current progress is coming soon. See the scientific newsletters for older writeups.

I've just seen the Server Status Page was updated - the Hosts section.
I wonder if this right:

vader: Intel Server (4 x dual-core 16GHz Xeon, 16 GB RAM)

16GHz Xeons???

i think it is 2 Ghz for each

4 CPUs x 2 Cores = 8
16GHz / 8 = 2GHz

Are we done with the self advertising song headings???

Personally, really not interested in your songs.

Any chance of getting back back on topic, to normal date or topic headings???

Personally I don't care what he names the thread. (He *does* put the date in it). It's the content that matters! Good work Matt! You just don't know how much we appreciate the flow of information!

Dismantling The Berlin Waltz

Thanks Matt . . . NOTE to others - in the Event You missed 'what' Matt has stated re: the Titles of his Threads - it's Music that he Listens to . . .

You may want to do the same (to check the Music out - it really is real interesting - a 'History' that's quite eclectic)

> Cheer Accident: Thymme Jones (vocals); Laura Brown (12-string guitar, alto saxophone, trombone, organ, tapes); Michelle Morrone (guitar);

Phil Bonnet (oboe); Chris Block (trumpet); Ross Feller (piano); Jeff Libersher (synthesizer); Jeb Bishop (harmonium); Scott Rutledge (bass);

Dan Forden (drums); Dylan Posa (vacuum cleaner).

< Recorded at Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Schaumburg and Streamwood in Chicago, Illinois between March 1992 and October 1996.

Who cares?

It's a bit more interesting than:

Server stuff week 1
Server stuff week 2
Server stuff week 3
Server stuff week 4
Server stuff week 5
Server stuff week 6
Server stuff week 7
...

Much more interesting are the contents and that Matt takes the kind trouble and interest to give such snippets.

Happy crunchin',
Martin

"Berlin Waltz" - I've never heard of that. Maybe it was popular in Germany. "Good morning, Captain...."- That's the first lyrics of "Muleskinner Blues" by the Fendermen, which got to #5 (in the US) on the 11th of July 1960, just after I got my first drivers license and a friend and I climbed the local, million-gallon watertower and got driven home by the police. Dolly Parton had it later as a country song.

No, not yet. Bear in mind these titles don't show up in the static, more visible technical news page - only in the forums. So they're kind of throwaways anyway.
