As the client is only a small program (6.75meg) would it be possible for some clever clogs to come up with an installer for mobile devices like PocketPC v3.0.11171 and above, I have a box full of these now redundant devices like Compaq Ipaqs which dont draw a constant 200Watts of energy and can be left connected to my wireless network indefinatly sitting there number crunching?

Hand Held devices are all about energy savings. If the user is not active, the processor slows down. Typically a 400MHz HH device slows down to 4MHz or so when the user is not active.

The BOINC client is not that large, but the data as it is being processed is much larger. Depending on the project, it can be anywhere from 50MB to 1GB while the task is processing.

Unfortunately, these are not good candidates for crunching.

Thanks for the fast reply here, you say they can use upto 1 gig of ram, I have 2 gig SDram in all these so would that now count these devices as potential crunchers - given that there would still be a need for someone to come up with a way to keep the device "alive" so to speak? - I know your going to come up with a silencer on me here but I really think its worth asking with all this climate change taxation and stuff all around the modern world? Obviously the best machines will be the most powerfullest ones but with a bunch of spare "cold" memory machines out there doing nothing else will prove to be a noticeable percentage of completed units within the space of a year or two - simply put, these devices will run and run automonousley with no heating up and no moving parts - Redundant array of inexpensive disks comes to mind..

Thanks again

You would have to keep them plugged in. Battery life if left on continuously is typically around a half an hour to an hour (I know this well, at my real work we had a bug in one of our programs that kept them alive).

Nobody is bothering just because the number of hosts in this category that can be left plugged in all of the time is small. However, both the BOINC client and the S@H application source (and a few other projects as well) are open source. If you can get it to work, or know someone that will get it to work, there is no reason not to.

The current push is to get a client available for the One Laptop Per Child PC as it has a huge number of possible clients but a somewhat non-standard OS.
