Another week, another database backup/compression outage. This time around I took care of many house-keeping details while we were offline. I restarted the load balancers on our scheduling servers to enact higher timeouts - we're seeing occasional messages in our logs about such timeouts. We'll see if my adjustment helps. We moved vader onto a power strip to facilitate yet more ease during the power outage Thursday night. I also fully power cycled bambi to recover the drives that were wrongly reported as "failed" yesterday. Also compressed a bunch of old archives, logs. And unconvered many sym link chains that I then cleaned up, which in turn will hopefully reduce NFS problems in the future.

UPDATE! This Thursday's electrical outage has been canceled. Woo-hoo! It shall be rescheduled sometime in the coming weeks.

I wouldn't Woo-hoo just yet. Knowing how these things go, it will be redone for the entire week between Christmas and New Years and require someone to come in most every day to restart things for the whole week. Murphy's engineering laws.

In any case good work on cleaning up the loose ends. Hope it makes things easier going forwards.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to give the project team & the servers a break & shut the project for Xmas period?

My systems may be running, but over the Xmas, I'll be spending time with family as quite a few are spread throughout the UK & this year, several members coming from abroad. I won't be worrying about computers - I may even check to see that all wu's for that week are crunched (hopefully they will be) & then shut whole network down, including server, after all, we humans take breaks from work - what about machines?

Also, think of the savings in electricity!

Or it will be determined that work was critical - after the fuse panel melts.
