Let's see. Kind of getting bogged down in proposal land (Dan, Eric, and Josh are doing most of the work on that but I get pulled in from time to time to help with the menial stuff). After the proposal stress is beyond us we'll begin the next donation push which will find me babysitting servers sending out hundreds of thousands of e-mails. Fun. Meanwhile I'll be chipping away at the zillion things on my to-do list which could easily take a man-year to complete.

Around the lab we've been discussing the notion of "e-mail bankruptcy" - realizing there is no way you can catch up on your teeming in-box, so you simply delete everything, then send out a mass e-mail to everyone saying something like "I deleted all my e-mails - sorry I didn't respond - if it's really important please send it again." In reality I do this all the time without sending that mass e-mail. Someday I might have to declare "to-do list bankruptcy."

Warning: we might have a quick BOINC database outage tomorrow (to clean up old logs). And then we'll keep the assimilators offline an additional few hours so we can safely build indexes on the science database. The latter won't affect normal upload/downloads.

I find the message filters tool and imap folders on Mozilla Thunderbird to be very useful...

Then again, I guess you are the centre of the known universe for nearly a million Setians!

Help! The website has been taken over by Spanish, particularly the "account" page! (this behavior in FireFox (2.0.0.3) - it seems to behave itself in IE...) In particular, the website is not using Unicode for the accented characters. For example, the line that normally says "add my signature to this post" now reads "Añadir mi firma a éste mensaje"!! Is it time to update to a more recent version of FF?

The solution is to upgrade FF to 2.0.0.9... this problem seems to be specific to FF 2.0.0.3! (on other computers [i.e. crunch-only computers] than my main computer, [which my first message was written on] I have various other builds of FF...) Odd that this problem is (or seems to be...)so version specific...

On my machine your message writes funny characters for the letters that are marked per the Spanish language. This may be a problem with my setup and not with most other peoples' machines. At any rate I'm writing what it should look like as far as I know. It could come back to you funny: "Añadir mi firma a este mensaje" means "Adding my signature to this message".

Matt, tks for the information,

But in fact, there are U/D load problems !

I have about 2000 WU to report each week ! And this only into 1 hour time due to the Intranet security. I reveive from the RDM 1 hour, once a week , open gateway to Seti. But when Seti is very slow, or offline it became problems ! I want to help the research.
Perhaps is it better to close Seti for a few days or weeks to solve all the problems.
All what it sended during server problems are into " fixing missing results ". But this server is out since the big crash in august.
I have now about 8.000 WU waiting for assimilation !!!
Each WU about 50 credits, it become about 400,000 credits !!!

And of course , when I connect and can receive new WU, they are also calculated. The final result is when i start the U / D load, your server receive much more information than it is capable to proceed. Weare more than 1,000,000 with the same problem !!! Of course when the server receive at the same time so much request, it can not proceed because the overload !!!

It is a snowball effect !!! Only Seti team can solve it. Then DO IT !!!!!
Instead of trying to repair "broken arrows " !

No fix is forever. Even if SETI were taken down for a month, it wouldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be a hardware or software crash later.

Don't you think if they had the capacity to make everything rosy that they'd do it? Do you think they like having all these problems and hearing people gripe about it every time there's an issue?

It's not as simple as shutting down the project to hit a button. In fact, shutting down the project won't help at all. How will they be able to tell if any fix them implement will be able to handle the full SETI load? They may as well just leave the servers running and fix the issues as they crop up.

I think they're doing a fine job.
