We need to petition Microsoft to develop a SETI client "screensaver" for the XB360. The reason why I would want to see it developed by Microsoft: - So it will run on a standard XB360. I have no interest in running Linux on my XB360. - So that it could be distributed easily over Live. - The "screensaver" aspect is necessary in order to get the masses to download it over Live. The XB360 doesn't really have a decent screensaver, anyway. - It is a win:win situation. Microsoft could use the hype that they are part of "distributed computing" just like Sony did with the PS3. |

We need to petition Microsoft to develop a SETI client "screensaver" for the XB360. I'd be really surprised if they signed up for this. Their reliability problems with the box are bad enough to have cost them a real black eye and a lot of money. If they have any people thinking about reliability at all, then making a bunch of boxes run hotter for longer would look like a detriment to their problem. |

We need to petition Microsoft to develop a SETI client "screensaver" for the XB360. @ Free: Not a chance for this to happen, If Seti were to run on the Xbox 360, The Xbox 360 would do a RED Ring of Death(Think XP BSOD!) as the Box is not designed for continuous operations, Which the PS3 can do as Sony designed the Box to do in addition to games, So I'd say Forget It, As It ain't going to happen. True. My Xbox 360 hung after playing 16 hours of Oblivion straight. But if they find the perfect cutoff FLOPS (not using the processors to 100%), it is probably going to work. And very well. Better than my damned 1.6 GHz Pentium M at least. And optimisation for it would be easy. Everyone with an Xbox 360 has exactly the same hardware to run SETI@Home. |

Wasn't there a die shrink of the 360 CPU to 65 nm supposed to happen around this time? That should help the heat issues at least for new units. |

The XBOX360 was hacked and it is posible to let Linux running on it : http://www.free60.org. As reading the hardware specs, I think it is posible to let the existing Linux PPC BOINC client and Linux SETI application running on the XBOX. Am I right, that the Linux PPC/Power binaries should work at the Xbox with Linux ? Is anyone interested to try it out ? But, I am not shure, if the hardware problems of the XBOX makes it imposible to let CPU intensive tasks running on it. |

As I said earlier, The 360 overheats really easy, So forget It, It isn't going to happen, They've said It's just a game machine and have no intention of doing any developments like Seti or Boinc on It. So somebody close this thread, please. It's useless. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Is there a statement from Microsoft about the overheating ? So somebody close this thread, please. It's useless. No. I did not agree. As Chirag Patel has posted, the XBOX did not overheat with reduced CPU util. So I see no reason to close this thread. So it seems, that BOINC could work with CPU throtteling... |

As I said earlier, The 360 overheats really easy, So forget It, It isn't going to happen, They've said It's just a game machine and have no intention of doing any developments like Seti or Boinc on It. Ever heard of RRoD? To those that don't know what that means, It means the Red Ring of Death and It usually means Your 360 is DEAD and If the software is unauthorized, Your warranty is automatically voided. In any case MS did say they'd look into porting F@H, But others have pointed out that MSes archrival could then do a comparison, Like which one crashes and which one doesn't, I don't think MS wants to give Sony a PR leg up. http://www.digg.com/microsoft/Rosetta_Home_Distributed_Folding_Coming_to_Xbox_360 http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/13/folding-home-on-xbox-360-under-consideration/ March 30, 2007 The above sentence is in the above link near the bottom of the page, So I think It's a dead subject as It was before March 30th when this was asked and so far Google can't find anything better, MS clearly isn't interested. Thank you for the links. As it is posible to let Linux running on the XBOX, we did not need Microsoft ;-) I think, it would still interesting to try it. The CPU throtteling features could prevent the overheating and the CPU specs looks interesting (3 core PowerPC CPU). |

Thank you for the links. On a hacked Xbox360 and Only on a hacked Xbox360, Which as soon as You update to the latest firmware would kill that hack and therefore no more linux and there's the possibility that any new firmware would see the hack and shut down the Xbox360 until It's returned to stock physically. MS sells games and makes money that way, They don't make money on an app that wouldn't even have 10% of sold 360's running It, Just more problems with overheating, So go ahead If You want, MS won't allow It on the Xbox360 anymore than they did with the original Xbox. And so far Linux is not authorized at all.
So I say again this thread needs to be locked as It isn't possible to get MS to change their mind. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

I have enough games for my 360, no need of SETI or folding@home. It does make sense only on console without good games ... and 360 running full time will probably generate a lot of Red ring of death. who? |
