When attempting to execute run_manager on Fedora Core 8, I am getting the following error message:
[gjohnson@HPLinux BOINC]$ ./run_manager
boincmgr: xcb_xlib.c:41: xcb_xlib_lock: Assertion `!c->xlib.lock' failed.

This is a xlib problem. Please look at this workaround : http://en.opensuse.org/Xlib.lock

I attempted their suggestion (export LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=true) but that did not help.

Yep having the exact same problem and everything I've seen so far on the net does NOT fix the issue. Still receive the error message.

boincmgr: xcb_xlib.c:41: xcb_xlib_lock: Assertion `!c->xlib.lock' failed.
Aborted

I hope someone comes up with an easy work around, I'm not a super Linux user.

Probably has something to do with the new built in Java stuff in Fedora 8. Just guessing.

Please get a cure - I need my Seti...

It is a bug in the xlib and xcb, not a SETI issue...
Could you please try, if this problem is fixed with a newer xlib and xcb version ?

Edit: Did this error also happens with a other BOINC Manager version ?
Btw. you could also connect remotly from a Windows Box with the BOINC manager to the Linux BOINC client, till the problem is fixed.

I've posted to Fedora the bug
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=383331

and I've found a workaround that let's boincmgr load succesfully (see the comments of the bug)

i like the package names "libxcb-1.0-3.i_acknowledge_that_my_jdk_is_broken.fc9.i386":)
you may need to to -Uvh the devel pkgs too.

link to packages from above post...

Me too!

Strangely it worked once, the first time I started it after I installed FC8. On the first re-boot it failed from then on.

By the way I am running X64.

The format I used was export LIBXCB_ALLOW_SLOPPY_LOCK=1
You'll see a couple of warning messages and BOINC'll start.

Having gotten past the xlib goofiness, I have discovered another issue with Fedora 8. When I manually lock the session (the only way to run a screensaver and not have it interfere with my media card) BOINC does not continue to run. It seems to stay in memory, but it stops actually processing. I'm playing with account settings to try to work around this.

OK, I've done of bit of experimenting and discovered the following: On Fedora Core 8 when the screen is manually locked, BOINC seems to think the system is too busy/slow on resources to run. Last night, while I slept eight hours with the screen saver on (manually locked), BOINC processed for 3 minutes total. This morning I walked away from the system without the screen saver on and processing was normal when I returned. I have 384M of RAM in this box and allocate 10% to running BOINC even while the system is in use, so the program's technically not even supposed to check for idleness before calculating. Even though it's a tower, I allow BOINC to always calculate AND while on batteries (it doesn't run on batteries, but I don't even want BOINC to bother checking).

Here's a couple of lines from system messages which seem to correctly reflect system settings I have chosen. The only slightly odd thing I can see is the CPU benchmarks test showing an error...

Message 717446 - Posted: 23 Feb 2008, 17:43:15 UTC

Hi,

I am using the last boinc versions on different machines (Linux (Mandriva 2008 distro)with dual core CPUs (either Intel or AMD) and Windows XP and Windows Vista, desktop or station).

After manipulating my SETI project default configuration preference, I observed that all my machines are suspending computation after a few minutes.

Although I answered no to both following questions
Suspend work while computer is on battery power?
(matters only for portable computers) no
Suspend work while computer is in use? no

and even set locally activity parameter to compute permanently.

Note : I did not set any screen nor energy saving option.

What could be responsible for suspending computation on all my machines ?

Thanks for any help.

Bernard,
F6BVP

Can you please post the contents of your global_prefs.xml file and if it exists, of the global_prefs_override.xml file?

You do still have BOINC set to run based on preferences, don't you?
