Post weekend update: Things have been running relatively smoothly over the past week. Bob, Jeff, and I got a few more warm fuzzies from the science database replica server today - we were able to stop/restart both sides without having to reinstall the whole database from scratch! I updated some splitter maintenance code, so that's why all the green dots disappeared from the server status page. I'll fix that eventually. But most of the day was spent working on swapping out a motherboard from a giant 4-processor Xeon server donated from Intel (and they donated the spare motherboard, too). This was the machine called "bane" that months ago I converted into a public web server and then after a week it crashed. Upon powering up it would beep out a cryptic error message and that was it. So I spent half the day today swimming in thermal grease (replacing heat sinks), unplugging, unscrewing, replugging, rescrewing, and scraping my fingers and arms on sharp metal things until the new motherboard was in place. Sure enough, same beeps. Sigh. These are used test systems, so there was no guarantee they'd work. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. .... Upon powering up it would beep out a cryptic error message .... I wonder whether Intel could be prevailed upon to donate a babel-fish (aka manual) that could guide you further? Those beep codes can usally be de-crypted and would give you some idea which sub-section of the system is b******d - it might even be something stupid like a bad stick of RAM. Hey There--I read this morning that the PLAYSTATION now being sold can do 200 Billion operations per sec--This seems to be 50 to 100 times what my Duo core intel MAC can do. Additionally it has seven auxiliary processors. It is reputedly sold below cost . Sooooo can we run an operating system on this PLAYSTATION that runs native mode Windows or LINUX SO THAT SETI can chug along at an increased pace? Sooooo can we run an operating system on this PLAYSTATION that runs native mode Windows or LINUX SO THAT SETI can chug along at an increased pace? I can't imagine that this hasn't been discussed elsewhere. You can already run Linux on the PS3. There are already BOINC projects that use its power: PS3GRID. Running SETI on the PS3 wouldn't give you any speedup compared to a normal computer. Lots of its code would need to be rewritten to take advantage of the SPEs and other parts of the strange but powerful Cell architecture. EDIT: You won't be running Windows on it anytime soon. Sure enough, same beeps. :-) Well, S@H had a machine that went “pingâ€Â, but now goes “beepâ€Â. The project won’t be complete until restored to former functionality. Actually, the real reason we’re looking for ET is to recover the original machine that went ping, since they stole it because there was a hidden message in the timings of the ping mechanism...
