Feeding will be on hold a few days until I can find some time to get to the store. I think I saw frozen White Castle hamburgers at a "specialty" grocers out here. I will look around. Spam and pudding (not chocolate) should be pretty easy to find.

I am a pediatric speech and language pathologist, so I would have to say that "obscure combination of the 3" is a rather fitting description.

Pediatric speech therapists tend to look playful and creative when working with our charges. Underneath that mask, we are driving forces of order!!!

We are always teaching something in every task we do with our kids - comprehension, memory strategies, processing, vocabulary, grammar markers, syntax, discourse cohesion, fluency, articualtion, pragmatics... and yes even COMPLIANCE from time to time (which also comes in handy with husbands!!!) We take data early and often because it helps us more effectively serve our children. We are a research based field and we honor and value the scientists who contribute to our knowledge base. We are (become???) keen observers of behavior... not sure if we are this way naturally and self-select for our field, or if study in our field shapes us to be keen observers.

Anyway, it is a great field!!! I have been an SLP for 18 years and have been married to Eric for 13 years. So I guess I was pretty geeky before him. Are there any other "speechies" out there? Any speech path students? Anybody thinking of changing fields? We can start another thread in the Seti Cafe if there are enough of us...

My guess was that you were in child behavioural psychology or something like that, based on your comments about infant development..so I wasn't too far off ;)

Sadly I am not in that field my self. I am a lowly physics teacher..but I am sure some of your work ends up as part of education theory and is part of good teaching practice.

Thanks for the kind words..and ML1 too. :) I know my six year old son my have regretted the time he asked mummy how rainbow's are made and got a very thorough answer that lasted about 40 mins..I guess my enthusiasm got away with me a little :D

...but back to the more important topic of this thread and something that has been bothering me. What exactly is fake Jello?

"Real" jello is mainly sugar and gelatin, which is an animal product. Unless it is in its dehydrated state, it should be kept under refrigeration. "Fake" jello is primarily sugar and carrageenan. It is sold in small ready-to-eat cups. It does not require refrigeration and is shelf stable for about a year.

For the carrageenan stuff, see Carrageenan:

A family of linear sulphated polysaccharides extracted from red seaweeds. The name is derived from a type of seaweed that is abundant along the Irish coastline.

Uses

    * Desserts, ice cream, milk shakes, sauces — gel to increase viscosity
    * Beer — clarifier to remove haze-causing proteins
    * Pâtés and processed meat — Substitute fat to increase water retention and increase volume
    * Toothpaste — stabilizer to prevent constituents separating
    * Fire fighting foam — thickener to cause foam to become sticky
    * Shampoo and cosmetic creams — thickener
    * Air freshener gels
    * Marbling -- the ancient art of paper and fabric marbling uses a carrageenan mixuture to float paints or inks upon; the paper or fabric is then laid on it, absorbing the colors.
    * Shoe polish — gel to increase viscosity
    * Biotechnology — gel to immobilize cells/enzymes
    * Pharmaceuticals — used as an inactive excipient in pills/tablets
    * Carrageenan has also been used to thicken skim milk, in an attempt to emulate the consistency of whole milk. This usage did not become popular. It's used in some brands of soy milk
    * Diet sodas
    * Lambda carrageenan is used in animal models of inflammation used to test analgesics, because dilute carrageenan solution (1-2%) injected subcutaneously causes swelling and pain.
    * Sexual lubricant and microbicide: Laboratory studies suggest that carrageenans might function as topical microbicides, blocking sexually transmitted viruses such as HIV and herpes. A clinical trial by Population Council examining whether a carrageenan-based product known as Carraguard is effective as a topical microbicide for blocking HIV infection in women was completed in March 2007. Results are expected at the end of 2007.


... A recent publication indicates that carrageenan induces inflammation in human intestinal epithelial cells in tissue culture ... Consumption of carrageenan may have a role in intestinal inflammation and possibly inflammatory bowel disease, since Bcl10 resembles NOD2, mutations of which are associated with genetic proclivity to Crohn's Disease.



Perhaps those raccoons are more intelligent than hitherto assumed!

In this case there might be a smell, associated with the flavor that would be more enticing to the various test subjects.

I wanted to say chocolate chip cookies but I already know the answer for the Racoons side...
