SETI@home also works on 64 Bit OS with 64 Bit BOINC - and it runs quite l on my Ubuntu 7.04 64 Bit system.

But it's not a 64 Bit optimized version (see http://boincstats.com/forum/forum_thread.php?id=1774). What's the reason that there's still no 64 Bit SETI@home? No development time left? Or would SETI@home WU's benefit just a little or not at all from 64 Bit code?

Optimized apps have been made and it appears as though (if I recall correctly) that 64 bit had little improvement.

It's a small advantage....and probably not worth the time for the staff to devote to creating and maintaining the apps for 64 bit, considering the minor percentage of the user base that have advanced to 64 bit.

Eric has made a 5.28 build for Linux/x86_64, but apparently only one reported platform will get it here. Dentaku's system still has 5.12 even though he's running BOINC 5.10.21, and the thread he pointed to says that even on Seti Beta where that 5.28 build is listed twice it isn't being delivered to AMD systems. The apps page for this project only lists 5.28 for one of the two flavors. I suppose the project's alternate platform configuration isn't set up as needed yet.

I don't know whether Crunch3r's optimized 64 bit build for Linux would outperform his 32 bit builds on that system. But any of Crunch3r's builds would certainly outperform stock 5.12.

[edit} Dentaku now has 5.28 per his other thread, I guess the project configuration has been updated.[/edit}

What you haven't considered are all the people running 32-bit BOINC on 64-bit machines. I still do that for compatibility with projects. If the BOINC core client had a stable version for linux x86_64 then I'd upgrade.

I have 64 BIt BOINC 5.10.21. And since yesterday, SETI updated itself to 5.28 "Multi-Beam". Is this a special 64 bit version of just the 32 bit version in a 64 bit "wrapper" (only recompiled)?

in the case of Core 2 , you are already using 128 bits execution units in 32 bits mode. don't expect wonders from 64bits versions, they will just avoid the (windows over Windows layer emulate 32 in 64 OS) WOW layer.

Yep, that is indeed running nicely on my 64-bits-only Linux systems as of a few days ago, all automagically.

Happy crunchin',

I use Crunch3r's 64-bit Linux app and it performs slightly faster than 32-bit.

My biggest issue is support for 64-bit BOINC itself for my 64-bit systems. The only officially released 64-bit version 5.10 requires awfully new libraries which are not provided for RHEL3 and RHEL4. The latter one truly boggles my mind -- RHEL4 is only two years old and will be supported for years to come.

I can't seem to build BOINC either 'cause BOINC expects automake and other build tools are too old on RHEL4.

So, it's 32-bit BOINC client with app_info.xml and 64-bit applications...

Yeah, I was initially encouraged by the release of beta 5.10.21 for linux, but they still got it in there head to use GTK1. Why does 5.8.16 use GTK2 and work just fine with RHEL 4 and they change all the requirements with 5.10.x release? I think they should have waited for 6.0 release to change these major things.

Have you tried just downloading the source for 5.8.16 and recompile with 64-bit libraries/compiler optimizations?
