I have been with seti@home almost since it began and I very muched liked the old classic version. It was smaller better graphic's and alot faster at crunching than this new BOINC Version 5.10.20 that they have now.

The ability to run the classic version for those who want it is my wish.

Come on guys listen to us out here in crunching land and bring back seti@home classic I still have version 3.08 on my hard drive.

Will never happen (as has been discussed numerous times on these boards).

Funding for SETI Classic ran dry a while ago and they could not afford to keep the servers running (electricity costs money, and so does the physical space that the servers occupy, not to mention the manpower required to keep things running smoothly).

In order to save SETI@Home (the project), it had to be ported over to the BOINC platform (for which it had new funding). Without doing so, the entire SETI@Home project would have vanished into thin air.

That being said, BOINC itself does not crunch any data (that is up to the science app that BOINC downloads), so it cannot be "slower" than SETI Classic. Further, refinements to the way the science app looks at the data has been fine-tuned causing the processing of workunits to appear slower, when in fact this tuning allow for a greater chance of finding E.T.I.

Also, many third party tools that had to be downloaded separately, like SETIQueue, are now built into BOINC so that a user can keep their own cache of workunits on their machine during server outages. BOINC's preferences allow for far greater control over the processing of the science app than the overly-simplistic Classic app ever could hope for.

Alas, the old SETI@Home servers that ran Classic have already been recycled into BOINC servers (or SETI servers on the BOINC platform). There is definitely no going back now.

There's a graphic display. That's what the BOINC Manager is. All the information is kept in the Messages tab of BOINC Manager. Anything you may want to know is shown there. If you do not know what the messages mean but would like to find out, you can always ask on these Q&A boards. There's plenty of helpful people out there that are willing to help explain things as best they can.

If you're not interested in the inner workings of BOINC, you can be rest assured that it has been created to be very fool-proof. If a download is ever interrupted, BOINC should be able to pick up where it left off when it can. If the servers are down, it will keep trying at semi-regular intervals until it finds the servers again. Alternatively, you can always join more than once science project to keep your CPUs busy during server downtimes.

It seems like several lessons learned have been applied to the newest version of BOINC...its nice to see upgrades aren't too bogged down due to politics.

Hello

I would like to see the good old seti client too.

Sure, I havent finished a lot of WUs (even with the old client), but if, I enjoyed the feeling that came with the old client. Now, with Boinc, that feeling is gone. The results are toggling too fast. without installing another program, just to get the results out of the WU your computer is working on, noone can get the current results just with the plain graphic putout...well, that are 2 programs, both with their own installer, both with their registry entries. I dont know, if others are thinking same, but I was more pleased with the old client. (the graphic putout was simply great, I liked the gaussian curve and the design at all).

Well, Im not silly, even if Im German, but I think though, those times are gone forever. Thats why I will just finish the current WU Im progressing on and then fall back to idle. Maybe next year there are more good news for me.

Have a nice time up then.

greetings,
aries

SETI Classic is never going to come back. Matt L. has a very nice post around someplace explaining exactly why. You have to decide to use BOINC or not.

Hello.

Ah, ic. Okay, thanks a lot providing me with this background knowledges. As you can see, Im still with the project, because I guess, I was too fast in writing my above post and too slow in thinking. So excuse me, I take back, what I wrote, because of the fact, that there ARE nice addons to get the results out of your WU's (even on this webpage its possible as I see now).

So forget what I wrote, Im with this project ;)
