Hi, i'm running BOINC from few days (24h per day), and now it's completely stopped. It has 6 tasks on 100%, ready to report, but the project as a communication deferred status with a 15h delay. Why there aren't new tasks or projects to do?The pc is completely idle now! It's a very resource waste...

Hi frakie,

there are a couple of thing to check, so please go to advanced view and check:

- Is Seti suspended (Projects tab)?. If so, select Seti@Home an click resume on the left side.
- Is Seti set to No New task (projects tab)? If so, select Seti@Home and click Allow new tasks on the left side.
- Open Activities Menu and check if either "do work based on preferences" or "always" is selected. (for test purposes you can temporarly check the "always" item and see if it works then)

If all of those settings mentioned above are correct, please go to the projects tab, select Seti@home and click "Update" on the left side. Wait some minutes, then copy the last 20 or so lines from the messages tab and post them here.

Things to check:
What's your "Connect every XX days" setting?
What's your "Cache of XX days" setting?
Are you sure it isn't a Server-side issue? (As in, Server files being moved around.)
    Is SETI@home your only project?

Yup, this was a little "flaky" weekend for the berkeleys servers and work was sometimes rather dripping than flowing... :-0

To avoid your machines going idle, raise your connection interval setting in your general preferences to something like 2 days (depending on your BOINC version you can also use the "Maintain enough work for an additional xx days" setting if you have BOINC version 5.10.x or higher). If you use venues (home/school/work) set them accordingly. Remember to save your changes and hit "Update" in BOINC manager.

Another alternative is to join an additional project like Einstein@Home or Rosetta@home... ;-)

That is pushing it a bit too much if you have an always on connection. You will get a lot of cancelled work (version 5.10.x) and wasted bandwidth. I would recommend back off to a max. additional buffer of 5 days.

No, Redundant results cancelled by the project would only occur if the project was still issuing an extra 'trailer' result by default, which is not the case any more.

The typical 'problem' with a max cache setting is that when shorter deadline results come in they have a tendancy to preempt older longer deadline result by forcing BOINC to switch to Earliest Deadline First mode (EDF).

Keep in mind, this is a perception issue and not a real problem per se. Probably due to the unfortunate linking of EDF to the phrase 'Panic Mode' in various documentation, which gives the impression that something went wrong with the host and is not the case in this situation.

There are a couple of issues to be aware of when running a max cache, but are related to the delays induced when a host has major malfunctions or drops out of the project without aborting the unfinished/unrun work and/or detaching from the project before leaving.

Hi Fred,

well, you coincidentally hit a server file access error followed by an outage. (Congrats! ;-))

I guess the servers in Berkeley are back online now, So could you try the update button again and see if it works now?

Thank you, now I set the additional work buffer to 10 days..:)

Not entirely a perception issue. If a project is in EDF, it will not be asked for work until such a time as it is no longer in EDF.

Agreed, I meant a perception issue from the POV that EDF is something 'bad' or the machine and/or software got 'broken' somehow.

The truth is if you're carrying a max cache, EDF is probably your best friend. ;-)

With that, I will fully agree - just remove the probably from that statement.
