I'm just curious I see alot of talk about excluding others from forums ? I think this kind of talk can cause an argument .
# 2 . The RAC , I have also seen a couple of dicussions on this RAC and weather it's high enough for one to be able to post .

First of all I don't know what the RAC stands for . I haven't looked it up yet.
However , I do not think that it should be a certain high before someone can post.

And I think talk like this will get the RAC to have to be a certain high before someone can post. And thats not fair.

And then thats when you will start excluding certain people from the forums.

I am entitled to my opionion and that is if we continue as a group or as a whole to have conversations about somethings.

Like excluding others from forums and your RAC has to be high enough .

Then you will probally wake up one day and tada. The admin or who ever thought hay thats a great idea.

And then , there will be a large argument .Amung the people who talked about it. And the people who didnt want it.

Because it sounds like when you read about these two items that there are people wanting this ?

* Just like talk and chatter about should we keep the cafe or should we close the cafe ?

If we continue to chatter about this kind of thing. Then we will look up and poof its gone. And we will wonder why and how and who .

Lets just all ban together and treat these forums like they should be treated and do what we should do and they will stay up and running. Geez ....

I'm not saying dont talk about things. I'm mearly saying if you talk about somethiing long enough or get enough people doing it
then all of the sudden something surely will happen on that .


Edit : Some peoples RAC may be low because they have another life besides Seti.
They have children and bills and husbands etc. And just haven't been able to work on SETI .

But they do seem to still chat in the forums HUM ?

You got that right. These forums are great & there are crunchers out there who do care - not only for the project but for other users.

They also provide links which can prove useful to people. I myself, have found several very good, & continue to use them.

However, I have found to my cost that one has be be alert as there is quite a bit of "baiting" going on. Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to rise to that bait.

I enjoy these forums, so the baiters will not catch me again. It is just not worth it.

If I remember correctly from another thread, I think the reason why they had RAC was to prevent spamming.

Anyway, it's nice to see you getting "your feet wet" so to speak.

The requirement is set high enough so that someone that is not actively doing work for the project will be excluded, but low enough so that most of those that are actually doing work will be allowed to post. In the help desk area (where people are trying to get help getting started) the requirement is 0. Most of the rest of the forums have a minimum of a RAC (Recent Average Credit) of 1. This means one credit / day recently, not really that high.

This was implemented after several people posted in ways to damage the forums without having done any work at all for the project (0 credit, 0 RAC after several weeks of presence). One of them got into a snit about something and set up an automatic post and thread creation process. This was hitting the message boards with about 10 new posts and threads per second for several hours before the attention of the moderators was gained. The mess took several days to clean up.

We have had several that have spouted rather hateful diatribe, again without benefitting the project in any way. Anyone remember JQ, WW, and Mr. HR along with a few others?

But with modern systems, it wouldn't take long to get rac up to posting requirements again.

Given your RAC, you would have about 12 weeks before you had trouble posting, assuming a floor of 1 for RAC.

These forums are for the use and convenience of people *currently* processing data for S@H. They are *not* general-purpose, open-availability forums.

You wanna ride the bus? Pay the fare. Its not that much. My boat anchor (a PII400) keeps a RAC of over 16 on S@H... More modern computers could easily maintain enough RAC to post here only running S@H a small part of the time. This is a non-issue.

You may ask, why not make them open to everyone? Answer is two-fold. First, running these forums takes bandwidth/CPU time/electricity that could be used to help with other Project 'server' processes at Berkeley. Second (as has been stated previously in this thread), when they WERE open availability we had more than one instance of people signing up just to post on these forums (mostly the Cafe) with no interest in the project... They merely wanted a soap-box to use to expound on their somewhat bizarre and extremely inflammatory views. They wound up being quite disruptive. We had to have *some* way to lock out the bozos to prevent not only a bunch of whackos making the crunching members upset, but also preventing actual spam attacks here. The 'day of 10000 threads' was NOT a pretty sight.

Of course, people are still able to make a 1st-class arse out of themselves here... But at least the S@H project gets some crunching out of them in return for the privilege.
